65 plate and headlight relay loom
Afternoon,

With the dark season approaching I was going to get a relay kit for the headlights to boost the voltage... but I read some later cars do t need an aftermarket kit as LR modified the looms... true?

If so does anyone know the cutoffs date when they improved things? Mine is a 65plate October 15 90 HT.

Mike...someone may contradict me...

I think they all benefit from a "loom"... as much as anything to protect the switch. There's a lot of people complain the headlight switch fails because "all" the current flows thru it. Most looms bring a Relay into the picture, reducing load on the original switchgear.

I have LED headlights which draw less current, but I've still bought a LandResiger loom to "fix" the known problem (altho I have yet to install it but will soon!) of the "weak" standard loom...

Landrover never improved the headlamp circuit on any Defender, and all models of all years benefit hugely from any modification to deliver full voltage at the bulb.

Well they sort-of, the wiring for the very late models shows a headlight relay...but clearly this was an afterthought and bodged in where they could fit it. This relay is operated by the side/head lamp switch so this no-longer switches the full current, but the main headlamp current still flows through the dip/main beam switch.

I've not seen the land reiziger loom, but I've seen the boomslang one & yes this could & should be better.
I take issue with the single fuse in the latter for all headlamps. This is a serious safety concern as you will lose all headlights when this fuse blows - that is if the fuseholder doesn't melt first.

Really? There's been one, ignition-controlled, relay in the headlight circuit for years, provided so that the headlights only work with the ignition on, but I was unaware that there was ever another fitted from the factory. When did the second start being fitted?

Indeed, I see your point there and something I've often thought about with any loom.
However, I can confirm the Land Reiziger loom has two Relays both individually fused, the only thing shared is the single main primary power feed which is for ease of fitting which is a good thing.

So, if Dipped failed main beam is present instead.
And in my case I have LED light bars on another Relay and circuit which is triggered not via the Land Reiziger H4 connector but the factory H4 connector.
So for talking sake, even if both Dipped and main on the Land Reiziger loom failed which would be uber unlikely I'd still have LED light bars instead.
The only switch current running though on mine is the Dipped Relay current, main Relay current and LED light bar current.
Under 1A max load though switch and with diode protection too to keep voltage spikes down.

I'm glad that will not be a concern to me, as you say it would be incredibly dangerous fatal even in the wrong place at the wrong time. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

My lights and spots are wired in exactly the same way. I’m now going to tell everyone how I used my awesome electrical skills to give a triple redundant system. However, I never actually gave it a moments thought, just seemed like the simplest way Laughing 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
