Td5 not starting - FAULT 27-01 injector # peak charge long
Hi.
My friends Defender refuses to start.
Nanocom is reading:
FAULT 27-01 injector 1 peak charge long
FAULT 27-02 injector 2 peak charge long
FAULT 27-03 injector 3 peak charge long
FAULT 27-04 injector 4 peak charge long
FAULT 27-05 injector 5 peak charge long

Changing the injector loom doesn't help. Fuel pump is working and gives 4 Bar.

The starter is cranking but the engine doesn't start.

Any ideas? Thank you for help and suggestions. Bergos

Has anything changed?

Did it just stop working or has this happened after a service or any other works? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

As far as I know it died a few times a few days ago and finally refused to start. No works done recently. Bergos

May sound daft but try swopping the Cranking Sensor for a known good one or just double check the wiring to it

I was thinking about it but wouldn't it throw an error? Bergos

Well I’d start by a Check on the ECU power and grounds! swapping parts never gets you anywhere, but out of pocket!

Do you have the fault codes in P-000 format?

What is that code read with?

In my entire life working at Defenders everyday I have changed one crank sensor on a Td5! and if you do ever get a crank sensor fault it is the regulator leaking and has destroyed the plug or wiring, or someone being ham fisted removing the gearbox.

Don’t like nanocom, but my thoughts are peak on injectors would point at a injector driver fault- possibly capacitors- but check the powers and ground stud first.

It’s possibly caused by oil getting into the ECU from the harness, a friend had a similar fault on his Discovery TD5. The only solution was a replacement ECU.

a bit random, but does it bump start? I had a starter motor go doo lally and it caused all kinds of electrical issues. Span fine and sounded healthy, i think it was shortin or similar inside and upsetting the other sensors and it wouldn't fire. As I live on a steep hill and my garage is further down it I rolled down and bumped it on the way and it went. Ran round for a few days parking on the hill and it always went with a bump but would crank forever without firing. Tried another battery and no joy, put a new starter motor on and its been fine since 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Seconded. The wiring to the crank sensor is known to get brittle and break causing intermittent starting and running issues.

Also,

it would be worth disconnecting the red and black plugs from the ECU overnight and retrying to start in the morning. This can help with ECU learnt issues.

Sort out all the factory earthing points and add in the ECU direct to negative terminal earth cable.

There is some evidence that this issue might be caused by the wiring harness that leads to the large multi-connector located near the clutch pedal box. The wiring between the plug and the injector harness degrades to the extent of shorting out causing these error codes to be logged. It also causes the engine to suddenly cease to work. Worth doing a continuity test along the length of this harness including whilst flexing the harness to see if there are any breaks along its length.
