15p vs 16p camshafts
Ok, how can the disco out power the defender 139 to 122?

Besides the tune there has to be a difference in the cams...

Can someone confirm before i buy one in vane.

No difference in CAM. 15P are in Defender and also in Discovery 2. Only one hardware difference - in Discovery there is wastegate modulator, in Defender there is just direct connection between turbo output and wastegate controll. Second difference is in engine ECU - different software.
The same difference was with older Euro2 engine - 10P.
It is not possible to use Discovery software (map) directly in Defender - they have different temperature gauge and gas pedal. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Regardless of 10/15/16p discos have a larger intercooler, shorter and wider airflow. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

Different rocker arms in 10P and 15P.

Down to fuel map files and the 1.2 box aiming for more “car” feel.

How about injector pressure? 15p injectors have a higher working pressures than 10p, hence the difference in rocker arms..
If I'm not mistaken there are black (10p), green (15p) and blue injectors.

I would imagine it’s largely software related.

It’s easy to remap a Defender to give an extra 20bhp or more without doing anything else to it. Mine's been running a low power remap for years (probably about 25bhp plus more torque)

Why could that not be the case with the TD5 when fitted to Discocery?

15P vs 10P have mechanical differences but they do not contribute to power. They were mainly designed for reliability. As MadTom allready stated the power difference between Discovery and Defender engines comes mainly from different ECU map, bigger intercooler and wastgate modulator, which the Defender doesn't have. Also a Discovery ECU allows for a higher boost, compared to the Defenders ECU.

My friend actually did an engine swap on his Defender, by installing a TD5 from a Discovery (complete with the Disco's intercooler and wastegate modulator). It was even possible to wire the Defender's ECU to control the wastegate modulator, but the ECU doesn't allow for a higher boost pressure than a Defender normally has. As such, it did drove considerably quicker tough than with its original engine. He did try it with the Discos ECU as well, but as was already stated elsewhere, the spedo and some other gauges didn't work then. He thinks the ideal combination would be a TD5 from a Disco 2, with the modulated wastegate, larger intercooler and a remapped Defender ECU, to allow a higher boost pressure Twisted Evil

Interesting.... I have always wondered if the wastegate modulator could be retro-fitted in to the defender and whether it is worth the effort. Always assumed it would actually reduce the vehicles performance, but perhaps it would just add an extra layer of fine tuning to it...

My friend is certain that the modulator makes the biggest difference. Considering that with the Defenders ECU the boost is not higher, the only differences left are the intercooler and the modulator. I'll try to take a picture of his engine bay. If I remember correctly, he just ran a wire from an unused pin on the ECU's connector. I suppose its the same pin which in Disco's ECU is wired to the modulator.

What’s wrong with just remapping the TD5 engine? (Well, the 15p version anyway)

20-30 more BHP, a fair bit more torque from lower RPM, slightly better economy (2mpg better on mine) and no need to modulate anything

Nothing wrong with remapping off course. Since his original engine (a 10P TD5) needed replacing anyway and the cheapest replacement available was a 15P TD5 from a Disco 2, it just made experimenting easy as all the parts were already available. It just got us thinking that if one were to remap a TD5, then perhaps adding a modulator on top of that would be even better for performance. Obviously if you are after maximum output, you should upgrade the whole turbo (and other components) But a wastegate modulator is a very cheap part for the gain it seems to provide.

NNN5000120 can be used on D2 and Defender just need to load the right maps.
