Crazy prices
Wonder if the crazy prices being asked for Defender particularly TDCi are sustainable.

Is anybody actually paying £25,000 for a 2009 SW or £40,000 for a late 110? If you look on Ebay most actually selling are in the sub £10,000 category (sub £20,000 TDCi)

It’s mad money, people must be off their trolleys bidding these up to these prices. Too much new money maybe? My friend dropped £42,000 on an “Urban Truck” 90 despite me showing him my mint £13,000 TD5 he sold it a year later and lost £10,000 on it.

It only takes one dreamer on EBay to dramatically overprice their Land Rover to have a huge impact on their perceived values. Lots of people have recently paid way over the odds for very ordinary land rovers and when they decide to sell, they want to try and recoup as much of their money as possible. Have a look at the traders advertising in lro, you'll see mostly the same vehicles for sale month after month. I guess it'll take a few years for the "fashion" purchasers to move on and that's when we'll see them returning to sensible values. There's no way on earth I would buy a Land Rover in this current market. It's a bit of a mess to be honest. Tragic how some beautiful classic examples have been sprayed in modern metallic colours and shod with redicilous alloy wheels etc. Batten down the hatches and ride out the storm, it'll get back to normal in a few years I'm sure. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Well, if you know defenders some are worth vastly more than others of exactly the same age/model. It depends how well they have been maintained/modified.

Companies like Twisted/Kahn take a Defender to pieces and rebuild them so you don't get the allot of the issues you'll get with others. No idea if Urban Truck do the same. 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

I see a lot of sellers trying to add the cost of their mods to the value of their vehicle. Buying a vehicle for 20 grand, then spending 10 grand on modifying it doesn't make it worth 30 grand. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

Depending on their mods, usually worth less than the initial £20k Mr. Green

Urban truck etc have done very well over the last few years, just by adding a few Kbx bits, window tints and sometimes nothing else, then managing to sell them for many many thousands above base price. Fair play to them! 2006 TD5110 station wagon

The funny thing is, if you try to part exchange a Defender with an ordinary car dealer, they insist on offering the “book price” which says £6,000 for a pristine 2003 TD5 CSW

The price guides are way out of line even the one in LRO which needs to catch up a bit, for example it thinks you can get a mint post 2002 TD5 CSW for £9,000 (trade price £4,000!!)

It’s a bit nearer the mark with my 2005 110 CSW at £14,500 although my trade in price is £6,000

It’s the trade prices that are way off the mark though, £4330 for a 2005 CSW? Maybe l am reading it wrong but car dealers refer to it. The VW dealer actually showed me a copy of LRO which said my unmarked 2003 SW was worth £3840 trade and their offer of £5,000 was “good”

I sold it privately for £12,000.

Maybe when we get a viable alternative from either JLR or some other manufacturers then the prices will start to drop.

By far the worst offenders are the DCPU (both 110 and 130) being converted into "Spectre" editions, with frankly rediculous tyres.

When i was looking for a defender the DCPU was my preferred model (coming over from a nis-nav) but all i could find was stuff converted to "spectre editions" that in fact were 300 TDIs or TD5s, and being sold as "luxury models" that didn't have heated seats, windscreen or aircon, or if they did it was a slap dash conversion.

I found lucinda being listed for about 8K cheaper that didn't have £3k of Censored bolted to it, and more or less in the same condition, and even better had XS so aircon, heated seats and windscreen, so yay/

I think a lot of it is geography, When i was on the search, i found a massive disparity between my local (T Elliot) and those further afield, i found rural areas were cheaper, and the further north or west i went the cheaper the price was, i even found a dealer in scotland that were 40% cheaper than T Elliot. for cars that were about the same condition.

To back this up my mate made a lot of money being a "car flipper" traveling north by train on business expenses, doing his buisness whilst looking round for a car, then buy one for his return and sell it on down here at a profit.

I seem to remember one instance where he bought a C220 in Manchester for £6000 drove it down here and sold it for £8000 within a week as the asking price was £10,000 geographically.

Mind you he did have an instance of buying an X5 and it broke down halfway down the M1 and i had to pick him up at 3AM... I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

It is the same for Series Ones:

Lots of hype.

Posh Auction Houses using Estate Agent language to justify silly asking prices.

Fashion.

Fashion-followers.

The cash-rich and stupid.

(The mistake to make is to think that everyone with cash to burn is "intelligent").

Masses of them have made investment howlers, they just don't publicise it.

All my life, I have been a "counter-cyclical" investor.

My advice: NEVER FOLLOW THE SHEEP (unless you are a sheep dog).

No boom lasts for ever.......

There are lots of viable alternatives available. The problem is they are more comfortable, smoother, quieter, economical, built with some level of quality assurance.............and who wants that? I mean really, where is the fun in that? We would all miss the excitement of not knowing which part is going to let us down next, or when the carefully looked after bodywork will start to spontaneously bubble and rust in awkward places. Just dull. Where would Puma owners be with out the (let's face it) lottery of output shaft failure? You just won't get the same excitement with an alternative*.

Indeed, and interesting to see how many on Ebay are not selling. One particular seller seems to have had stuff on sale for a very long time with prices up and down like a brides nighty. I have a feeling that for all “traditional” Land Rovers the hype has been done to death and the boom is hopefully over

I think a lot of the newer TDCi Defenders are bought by people who want to buy into the dream, and so they sell their Audi and buy a TDCi XS with “sports seats” fancy alloys and a posh grille/headlamp surrounds
And then they start to drive it and think “damn....” and sell it after eight months because they never really got into the Defender way of doing things.
These “Urban Trucks” and “Chelsea Trucks” are really nice but are still Defenders and it’s a bit of a culture shock after a VW Touran or BMW 530.
But their kids will have loved the time with the Defender, as it wiped the street cred floor with the SUV/Evoque sea on the school run.
