300 started tapping at rear of engine
Morning all, took the mrs out horsing the other night and on the way home the 110 started tapping, there doesn’t seem to be any loss of power and still pulls the horse box like a train. It’s a kind of tapping, psstting, for lack of a better word, type noise, of which seems to be coming from the rear of the engine, it can’t really be heard from the drivers side but is very audible from the passenger side and from inside the cabin. I’ve recorded a couple of videos but haven’t a clue how to get them up on here Embarassed . Any clues to what might be making the noise? And how to get the videos on here Laughing
I’m a bit hesitant to use it when it’s making strange noises and I’m getting badgered to take the mrs and the horses out again Rolling Eyes

Should also mention that I can’t feel any blowing coming from either the head, rocker cover or exhaust gaskets, if that helps.

Could be the vacuum pump. ISTR that made a tapping noise when it was failing on a 300tdi Discovery that I owned some years ago. Darren

Mine started making chuffing noises and it turns out the head gasket was blowing out of the back of the head. If you put your hand down between the head and bulkhead you could clearly feel air blowing. Might be worth having another look as it sounds exactly like my symptoms Thumbs Up Matt.

wouldn't it be a blown manifold gasket.. he said PASSENGER side but I don't know whether he means left or right by that ( i know the British can be really weird about left or right, the call it OS and all sorts of things)

So if it is a RHD the passenger would be where normally the driver is. in that case it could be what happened to me, there was a stripped thread in the head

ended up putting in 10 helicoils and a new gasket, all fine!! Fixing Land Rovers in rural Guanacaste

Thanks for the suggestions folks, I’ve also been told it could be a injector seal, I’ll have a good look at it in the daylight in the morning.

On further investigation, it seems like the head gasket is blowing Big Cry
I can see a 10mm gap in some dust that’s accumulated at the back of the block where the head sits and it’s blowing from there. Not bad going really, 250k miles and it’s first blown head gasket.

Glad you found it Thumbs Up

300tdi head gasket isn't too difficult especially if you have the Haynes manual. I would recommend replacing with the metal gasket rather than a composite one - be sure to replace like for like thickness if you're not getting the head skimmed.

Good luck! Thumbs Up Matt.

Cheers, hopefully it’ll be fairly straight forward, It’ll be the first time I’ve done a 300 head gasket.

Not hard to do one. Just like any head cleaning is important and make sure you clean out the threads in the block and dry them. Little light oil on the threads.

Good you found it in the end Thumbs Up

Your gasket did a bit better than mine, my first gasket went at 232,000 and it was blowing at the back like yours Wink 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.
