Which springs?

Are TD5 and TDCi springs different? I thought the TDCi springs were progressive to give a better ride quality?

I have been offered a new take off set from a 110 2.2 SW but the seller says they are “no different” to the TD5 ones.
He says the TDCi appears to ride better due to it being generally more refined with more sound proofing and a better gearbox.

What colours are painted on the springs?

The TD5 110 CSW came with;

Front - White/White Nearside and Yellow/Yellow Offside progressive rated at 155/215 lbft

Rears - Both Purple/Brown progressive rated at 270/420lbft

These make a hellofa difference over the single rated LR springs used on earlier models and non-station wagon models.

I have since upgrade to Old Man Emu springs and shocks all round as the weight of the roll cage eliminated the point of the lower rated part of the spring and Miffy sat too low.

Do you know if the TDCi springs were any different?
If my 2005 110 TD5 SW has the same springs as the TDCi there’s no point changing them.

I agree and no I do not know the answer off hand.

Drop the guy a line and ask what colour coding is on his springs. You can at least rule out them based on that.

Actually, I have a vague recollection that the Puma springs are different; longer from memory.

2000 Defender 110 Td5 XS CSW Epsom Green

I believe that Puma and Td5 110 rear springs are progressive. Which means that one end the coils are more tightly spaced the other end is wider. Variable weight in the vehicle with a better ride overall. Colour codes are correctly posted for the Td5 springs above. That is the best way to tell for sure. If you want a smoother ride install spring isolators from a DII in front and Toyota Tacoma in the rear.

What does it mean “rears purple/brown progressive rated at 270/420 lb ft”

Does that mean there was a normal and a heavy duty option and the heavy duty version had brown paint while the standard spring had purple paint?

I ask as my 110 sits higher at the rear by about 1” than most, l know the previous owner towed a boat with it and l wonder if he fitted heavy duty springs.

The 270/420lbft relates to the fact that a portion of the spring is rated to 270lbft and the remainder is red to 420lbft. The theory being that when unloaded the ride is more supple and when carrying 9 people plus baggage the suspension would still hold the body up off the axle.

And it works brilliantly...

Thanks that’s all really helpful advice and exactly what l wanted to know, so it’s probably not worth replacing my springs.

Have you got the part number for the isolators?

Do they fit 110 or 90 because IIRC 110 have bigger/wider rear springs? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

I may fit those as well.

I decided to order the springs anyway as they are brand new and only £100 for 4. (from one of the companies who bling up new Defenders)
Mine have done over 100,000 miles and are pretty rusted up.

So the springs have arrived from Twisted, they are new take off.

One pair has green and white markings and the other pair have yellow marks, they said the springs were from a TDCi SW.

The yellow/yellow pair appear to be standard 110 front but the green/green/white pair don’t appear on the springs list above.
Anybody know what these are before l fit them?
