3 Model Ranges Discovery / Range Rover / Defender (probably)

If the new Def actually ever looks like this, I wouldn’t mind. You can clearly see the DNA. However, and I know we’re a long way from delivery, those photos in MSN are awful. I very much hope those are random panels on the development chassis and nothing more. Also, if what they say in the article has any truth to it, (we should never trust journos), they’ve delayed launch by a year so that it doesn’t clash with the launch of the Evoque Mk2. Shows you which JLR value more in terms of potential sales. Evil or Very Mad Monsieur Le Grenadier

As has been pointed out many times, the camouflaged mules are merely that: hacked about RR Sport bodies being used to test the drivetrain and give no indication about the eventual design other than the wheelbase. The other pictures in that article are merely Photoshop speculation (except the Series III Laughing ). Darren

But we're still no wiser as to what it's going to be!
2 wheelbases (or more). - there are photos of long and short mules running around.
Beyond that there's nothing definite about optional body styles. Station wagon is a certainty.
Power train? - any manufacturer would be stupid not to cover all options going forward. Petrol, Diesel and HEV/plug in.
If the pricing rumours are correct, then it might be just possible to get a base spec '90' for under £40K
I guess we'll know in a year, or so.

B/M, out of interest, what are the views down there in the Falklands? Are people moving to Japanese pick ups, are American trucks imported from South America, or does the existing Land Rover fleet keep getting repaired and put to work? I know a few people who have moved there for work and took a 4x4 with them, usually a Pajero or a Discovery 1 or 2.

Just curious, that's all. Very Happy

There are still loads of Defenders around so they will go for years yet. My 2006 300Tdi has 32,000 miles on it, the Puma has just over 8000 now. In fact the local dealer has just secured a consignment of delivery mileage 110SW that were a cancelled UN order or something - a mix of white and the special edition HUE green ones.

Otherwise, fleet users like Government and military contractors are mainly going for crewcabs, either Rangers or L200, for new working vehicles. Most don't go far off road and there is still a gap there - the large market for off-road tour driving is still a mix of Defenders, and Toyota Amazon/Colorado with suitably expensive mods to lift suspension and fit large wheels/tyres and decent bumpers. Takes a lot to float 3 tons of Amazon on peat but it seems to work. They are all quite old vehicles now though, the newer models seem about as useless as what comes out of JLR's plastic tat factory these days.

I'm mainly interested in the Defender replacement - if it ever exists - as a possible replacement for my Shogun, rather than a Defender replacement. I think when the time comes to retire the old 300Tdi, it will probably be an Ibex if they are still being made. ---
