Due to Gbox oil leak I was able to asses the shaft. It was 'greased' at circa 20K at the local main dealer when they did the engine oil leak under warranty. and TBH It was mainly dry with some powder rust marks and only a small amount of something that looks like silver slip on it. The picture shows it after cleaning up. I have thoroughly re-greased it and reassembled, as the splines look fine.

Good mix of driving between taking it easy and flooring it with 1/3rd being stop/start/country roads and 2/3rds motorway. Vehicle driven with apr 250-300kg of load most of time plus 10k of mileage towing up to 3000kg. Diff Lock & Low ratio used quite often. 3rd clutch.

I think I have been lucky, so far!!

No off roading, not much mechanical sympathy either! Current Steeds:

No off-roading, much mechanical sympathy, may have been greased when crankshaft oil leak repaired under warranty at c. 10000. Drivetrain clunk currently present, despite, rear half shafts recently replaced under warranty. Current Steeds:

Any view on whether 90s, 110s or 130s are more prone to failure? It feels like I hear about more 110s, but that might just because I pay more attention to those because that’s what I have. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hi, the survey did not include the question of 90, 110 or 130.
The questions were focused on manufacturing year and milage, to see if there were particularly bad years or a trend.
In my opinion the problem is associated to the gearbox, coupling, shaft and transfer box. The manufacturing tolerances, materials, heat treatment and assembly conditions of those parts.
All of which are common to the 3 wheelbase variants, so I would not expect to see any one being different to the others.

The responses include failures on low milage, lightly used 90's, so load and weight were not a factor in those cases.
When the number of replies reaches a worthwhile number I will update the survey results. Last check showed it was still in line with the charts on page 5 of the thread. Thumbs Up

If have a close look at the output shaft from the gearbox, beside the longitudinal splines there are some very fine ones across as well. Are they designed for lubrication purposes? I'm not an engineer so I may be talking BS Puma 110" SW

Do you have a picture? None of the shafts I have seen are like this, and I would suspect that they are machining marks or similar.

There is no factory provision for lubrication on these parts at all, hence the problems.
