I was actually freeing up my waste gate earlier and was unaware just how free it needs to be, so it drops back to centre position itself (as mentioned earlier).
This youtube clip was most helpful...

I just used WD40 as that's all i had to hand, but worked well enough and will keep an eye on it now, it's not a tricky job.

when was the fuel filter last changed? is the pump noisy? what size wheels and tyres? what transfer box ratio etc?

mine on 33's and a 1.2 struggled much over 70. It was over geared. it also went slow just before the fuel pump died. Started foot to the floor to do 70, then a few weeks later 60, then same again and 50.
The injector seals had gone putting carbon in the tank which killed the pump and blocked the filter. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r

New VDO MAF did the trick so it appears that if running with and without a MAF doesn't affect performance then it's likely gone.

Top speed now 78-79 which I'm putting down to my lift and roof rack with associated gubbins making the aero worse than when it left the factory.

Throttle response is now good in all gears so I'm happy enough. Thanks for all the comments/suggestions

Well, it made no difference if it was connected or not so I had my suspicions, to confirm I bought the cheapest one I could find to see what effect it would have and it was worse than no MAF which gave me enough confidence to fork out for a decent one . Got a VDO one from island 4x4 in the end

What did you end up doing to your wastegate Jon ?
Just spray it with lots of lube ?

My apologies, just noticed your post.

I disconnected the c clip from the wastegate that holds the actuator rod. I then sprayed lots of GT85 around where the shaft goes into the turbo and kept working it back and forth 'stop to stop' until it would return to centre without either sticking in the open or closed position.

I last checked it about 6 months ago, and it was as free as it had been when I fixed it.

My symptoms were exactly as per the OP's.

Checking it with mole grips won't tell you anything - it needs to be REALLY free.

Never ever poke through the insulation on wiring you heathen! Shocked the only way I would do it is last resort with a Pomona piercing probe and then seal it up with liquid electrical tape.

Back probe the connector instead.
