Diagnosis Please
(and help with spelling!)

A few days ago our 2000 td5 refused to turn over.
Charged the battery and next day it was fine
Day after - no turning over.
Bad battery thinks I so changes it
Ok for a couple of days then stops in the middle of a run same symptoms.
After leaving it for an hour it starts and runs

Looking at the battery the +ve terminal is very hot
Volts look good
Charging seems to be 20A ish

Are we looking at an alternator gone US?

cheers for the help as always

CC

Having read up a bit now I am thinking it is the starter motor.

Difficulty turning the starter over
sticky so when it is running it is acting like a generator and super charging the battery making the terminals hot and frying the old battery.

Will tell you if a new starter sorts it out.

unless anyone has a better idea.

If your startermotor is turning very heavy by hand. Open the gearbox section and change the grease. Roel

With the starter changed the symptoms seem to have dissapeared.

I put a new one in for £90 to get it done quickly. So fingers crossed it will remain that way.

Interestingly not many here seem to have had the same problem so hopefully this might be useful to some.

I don't know the correct term. But the wiring to my starter played up until I cleaned the switched live and greased it up. Messing and wiggling the connection would get it to start.

It was always after it had got wet or damp. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
