Help - Issue when going 90km/hr
Hi All,
First time writing on this forum.
I'm having issued with my Defender Puma 90 2.4L. It has 200K on the clock, and never gave me any major issues (except for a blown up front diff and new clutch kit).
The thing is that now when going around 90km/hr, I can't go any faster. It's like the engine lost all its power and the turbo won't activate.
This happens randomly. After a few minutes driving will disappear or after an hour of driving could start happening.
I've been having this issue for a couple o months, but this morning the Check engine light when on, when it was happening.
I just went to my local mechanic for a scan, and two code errors showed up:
1.- P1103: Mass air flow sensor in range but higher then expected.
2.- P0234: Turbo/supercharge overboost condition.

At the begging my though was that maybe something was obstructing the airflow into the engine, by the error codes show otherwise.
Any ideas what could be happening? Maybe the MAF sensor misgiving off readings and messing up de turbo activation?
Any other suggestions?

Have you checked the turbo. Sounds like the actuator could not be working properly.

I had a similar problem and found the vanes were sticking when it was hot. It tended to happen when it was hot. A switch off and restart would usually fix it

Also check the wiring harness to the turbo for chafing damage all the way from ECM to turbo.

About the P1103 error code:
Check the air inlet system for leaks or blockage. Check MAF sensor or replace the sensor if needed.

Thanks for all responses.
I changed the MAF sensor and clear the codes.
Drove this afternoon and worked fine. Also before doing the changeI realized that some smoke was coming out of the exhaust, and after changing the MAF sensor the smoke was also gone.
I believe all was caused by a malfunctioning MAF sensor, causing the turbo to go crazy and bad combustion in the engine.

You can clean the MAP and MAF sensors, if you've changed the MAF I'd recommend you clean the MAP.
