"Adjuster bolt" next to drop arm
Hi all,

I've got a clunking noise coming from the front, I think I've identified it as a knackered drop arm ball joint (the joint clunks as it knocks backward and forward going over bumps)... when I asked local garage to look at it when doing something else they came back and said they'd tightened the "adjuster bolt next to the drop arm"... what is this?

Ever since they tightened it I have 2 noises coming from the front, the one I identified and this new one which sounds like a knackered CV joint when I turn the wheels... sort of clicking/unhappy knock...

The clunking I identified happens when going over bumps... the one the garage introduced is to do with steering so I want to undo what they did before it knackers something.

So... any idea what the "adjuster bolt next to the drop arm" is?

Thanks..

Never heard of an adjuster bolt for the drop arm, unless on the very latest ones they have introduced such a thing but I have never seen one if they have and what would it adjust?. There is an adjuster on top of some power steering boxes but that would not tighten the drop arm. The only thing I can think of is the garage tightened the nut on the threaded shaft of the ball joint that but I cannot see that doing much good. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

They could be talking about the steering box adjuster which is located on the top of the steering box. That wouldnt be used for adjusting a worn ball joint though. It is generally used for reducing the amount of slack in the dead-ahead steering position.

thanks - if over tightened would that induce a clicking / stressing noise?

Is it possible to determine where the noise is coming from, can you get someone to move the steering wheel from side to side while you listen if you can rule out one or the other at least you will know if the noise is coming from the drop arm ball joint or the power steering box? Or even the track rods or any other ball joints attached to the steering. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Yep - the tie rod end at the end of the crossrod... which doesn't make sense if he only tinkered with the steering box

I'm going to replace all the tierod ends and overhaul the the ball joint by the steering box so I might remedy everything at once anyway...

you'll need a drop arm puller to get the arm off;

https://www.toolstoday.co.uk/sealey-steeri...90-110-130

There are cheaper suppliers around - but make sure its suitable for Defender as there is a similar looking one for Series vehicles.

I sprayed with plus gas left to soak and then gave it ago.
first time round i stopped thinking it was Censored tight... i then tried on an old steering box i had; and it needs a long breaker bar... once i realised this i tried again on the vehcile and a nice "crack" later it was off.

You can buy new balls kits for the arm; but check which arm you have; the ones with the lip cast to hold to ball cover is the type you want; earlier ones relied an a metal piece to hold the cover in place; and on mine the arm had gone oval so no good; luckiliy i had the later type spare.

Complete patern arms are only £20+ - the other ball joints are easy. Plenty of videos showing how to do it online.
Great satisfaction when you do it yourself

example shown below of lip type vs no lip and the metal retainer that is a pain to fit on an older warn arm.

Or use the excuse to upgrade to a std tre setup as sold by gwyn lewis and get a hd drag link too. These were std on disco tdis, but they kept the drop arm ball joint on the def for some obscure reason. Far easy to maintain when it's a tre. Cheers

Not used this Land Rover Defender Steering Box Drop Arm Ball Joint Removal Tool but it is a lot cheaper than some others.
