2006 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Bonatti Grey

Td5 90 steering play

Recently I have noticed my steering isn’t as tight and precise as it once was. I have clocked up the miles in the last 12 months, 10k and only use it weekends ?!

It’s just hit 76,000 and maybe the steering box may require a little adjustment? I’ve checked all the bushes and ball joints etc

I have never had to do this on my other 90’s and was looking for the correct procedure. Some say only adjust in the straight ahead position and other say on full lock right or left depending on where the most play occurs?

I’m 99% sure you do it in the straight ahead position but just wasnted to be sure.

Definitely adjust at the straight ahead position. Don’t overtighten it, there should be no tight spots.

Worth checking the UJs on the shaft as well.

I know you say you’ve checked the bushes but the panhard rod is known for giving loose steering problems when the bushes are loose. This is best checked by laying under the front of the vehicle while someone turns the steering wheel from side to side, ideally with the engine running. The steering arm will try to push the axle sideways and this will show up any slop in the bushes very quickly.
