I personally think that they’re never going to please us lot and other people who like the style of the defender. They may as well just set out with one simple goal - to make the most capable 4x4 on the market. If it can genuinely perform better than the competition then it’ll speak for itself.

My biggest worry would be that it’ll be an expensive “throwback” which is too big/smart to really be any good off-road. Cheers, David
Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8.

I am waiting to see what Ineos come up with, it will be cheaper, hopefully modular and built by someone who seems to care what existing Defender owners want.

Do you think the next defender might look like this here?

Plant is taking shape, but from the looks it seems start up is still at least 6 months away.
Is it one single assembly line? If so, it means that Defender and Discovery which both will be produced there should have quite a few under skin commonalities.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Just came from the Beaulieu LR event and spoke to a JLR employee who was more than happy to talk about the new defender, apparantly I was the only one to have asked all day, and that was about 3, so;

He has driven it, seen final designs, and absolutely loves it.
He says LR are adamant it has to be the best off road car ever built.
It will come in three sizes, 90 110 and 130 equivalents.
Again, old model styles too, csw, hard top, pick up etc.
It will be much boxer than modern LR designs, it will look like a defender.
It's going to have the same engine as the Velar, so a 2l 6 cyl
Forgot to ask about transmission, sorry, but the Velar is all wheel drive rather than 4wd, it's rwd normally, then kicks to 4wd when selected, but does have diff lock
The spec is where it falls down for me, he says it's going to be like the Disco 5, similar interior, lots of electronics.
So, some good, some bad....

To build a good 4x4 all you need is a ladder chassis, articulated axles, good gearing, four-wheel drive strong prop shafts and a good reliable engine. You do not need lots of electronic wizardry. In addition, while a happy thought you do not need expensively designed velour interior and programmable seating. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I’m told it will share the same air suspension platform as the D5, RRS FFRR

Rolling with laughter I think you're trying to say it's part-time 4WD (or part-time AWD) rather than full-time 4WD. Which is a great shame, since the fact that the Defender has full-time 4WD is one of its great strengths and now (I believe) a unique selling point amongst light 4WD commercials. What a shame another great feature will be lost when the supposed replacement (which is unlikely to be anything if the kind) comes along.

Just quoting the JLR guy, all wheel drive is the phrase he used, def 2w rwd normally.

Is it really part time, or power just heavily ratioed between front and rear axles.

The freelander 2 had a haldex, so for normal driving it gave drive to to all wheels all the time, just that the torque was balanced heavily to the front axle (80% IIRC?) to make it efficient ... then it could transfer the torque to the rear as required.

So all wheel drive, but not equally powered.

I'd imagine similar happening with the defender. -------------------------------
I miss my V8's....

That would certainly make more sense. I am not familiar with the Velar, well, not the new Velar anyway.

By the sound of it the LR guy was more marketing than engineering, knows the words but not the meaning.

One of the off road instructors, so quite confident he knew what 2wd means Smile don't forget series used to be the same, 2wd with selectable 4wd, they did OK I suppose ( didn't see any freewheeling hubs on the Velar)....
