Low mileage. Is it worth changing fuel & air filters?
It's service time again and the Defender has covered a grand total of 4,000 miles since the last B service.
Last year (around 2000 miles ago), I went through the A service schedule.

Question is this. Is it really necessary to change the fuel and air filters after 4000 miles? In two years another vehicle could have done 20K miles.

I don't object to buying the filters, but it seems a waste if there isn't any need. If I was driving in really dusty conditions and filling up with fuel from farm fuel tanks or rusty barrels, I wouldn't hesitate. But I'm not.

I will definitely change the engine oil & filter and check the other oil levels, but I do wonder about the air & fuel filters.

Thoughts?

If it spends a lot of time sitting about then changing the fuel filter won't hurt, incase there has been any bacteria in the 'stale' fuel.

Air filters you can visually check for condition - in fact the transits used to have a red/green indicator on the filter housing, you just changed it when it popped up.

Good point ZSD on the fuel filter.

I've ordered a Mahle filter off Fleebay this afternoon for the bargain price of £10.50. At that price it isn't even worth the debate.

When I did the airbox mod a few months ago, the air cleaner looked like new anyway and at the time I gave the fins a good blast with the air line. So I won't bother changing it right now.

2004 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Epsom Green
I service my 110 at every 6k miles or 1 year which ever is sooner.

My service consists of every 6k/1 year -
Engine oil + filters
Air filter
Grease anything with a nipple Razz
Plus a checking everything else

12k/2years -
Above +
Diffs, TX box, gearbox, swivel grease (i tend to use proper EP90)
Fuel filter

I try to plan to service when i think ill hit 6k but sometimes it ends up being much lower as either a long trip coming up or knowing I wont have the time. Most recent service was done at 4900ish miles as off to france next week for some offroading so wanted everything fresh as possible.

No harm in changing service parts often. Generally quite cheap ive found (then again i did bulk buy genuine oil filters for a steal!)

I also tend to think more frequent oil changes are better than using a pricey oil for a longer period. Instagram @defender_ventures
