United Kingdom 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Santorini Black
2.2 Puma Limp Home Mode
Hi All

Currently in France travelling from the UK. Had a bit of nightmare journey in the Defender kept going into limp home mode with check engine light on. Did it the day before and my local indie had a quick look and it was showing some MAF faults - I didn't get the codes and couldn't get a spare MAF to take with me but it was intermittent so rolled the dice - not such a good idea with a Land Rover Confused . If I turn the engine off and back on it runs normally for a minute and then drops into limp home mode. Eventually discovered if I keep the revs above 3000 rpm it runs normally for hours.
Pulled the MAF and MAP sensors cleaned with brake cleaner no real change. But pulled the air change temp sensor intercooler on the intercooler pipe - green sensor on the intercooler pipe - it was covered in a thin coating of oil - so cleaned it - check engine light goes out car ran normally for 15 mins at any revs and then check engine light came back on back into limp home. Pulled the air change temp sensor intercooler cleaned it again check engine light went off. Spoke to a couple of garages in the UK some oil in the intercooler pipes is normal apparently so wonder if this sensor is giving a false temp reading and the engine goes into limp home. Engine hasn't used any oil on the 500 mile journey. So was going to try and get this sensor and a MAF sent out to me in France for the return journey. Has anyone else had this issue? Don't think it's a split hose engine sounds normal and I wouldn't expect to get any boost with split hoses, air cleaner is about 1000 miles old and looks in good condition, air box is correctly closed up.

Thanks

Ben

Where about are you?

Id suggest getting the codes read to find out what it's unhappy about. You could be chasing a red herring with the old MAF faults that were logged.

MAF faults aren't necessarily caused by the MAF either, an EGR valve playing up can also trigger spurious faults.

Check all intercooler hoses for tighteness and leaks these leaks show up as a maf map pressure difference.
Listen for a slight hissing under load as an indicator.
A little soapy water around pipe joints can help find a leak.

Do the intercooler too. Mine split and didn’t hiss but allowed enough out to trigger maf codes randomly

Thanks I’ll check for leaks I’ve also got a maf and charge air temp sensor coming just in case it’s one of those.

Where in France are you
Anywhere near the limousin region?

If you are and get stuck I have a basic gaff with beds and shower that is available.

Good luck getting sorted.

Hi there - if it's a 2.2 take a quick look if the DPF sensors set loose. Bonne chance!

Hi All

It got us back from France all ok and it turned out to be a split in the intercooler near one of the ends it was repaired under the extended warranty. Ideally I’d like to upgrade the intercooler and hoses but there is prob no point while under warranty as the dealer only uses genuine parts. I would really like to add a third party cruise control but I don’t know if that would invalidate the warranty.
