What kind off tuningbox you have? There are bad ones and good ones. A proper tune might be better than the best tuning box but there are plenty off tunes that are worse than a good tuning box. Very Happy I know that 99% of the members will not agree openly but some will silently agree what I am saying here.

There are 2 types off tuning boxes: The bad type change sensor signals to let the ECU tell the injectors to add more fuel. The other type doesn't change any sensor signals but take the ECU injector signal and tell the injectors to add a little more fuel.

There are cheap tunes around that are not really tunes but just change the throttle response. say at 25% off throttle input they programm it to be 35% etc so you engine feels more reponsive but as 100% throttle will still be 100% you didn't get any more horses.

Hiccups are most off the time a result from oil in the loom. If you didn't change the engine harnass you probably have to keep cleaning your red plugs for a long time untill no oil comes out anymore.

Your ECU cable extension: Make sure the connections are nice and clean. If your ECU is nicely placed high up the oil might not get further than the lower connection. Keep that clean.

Just to let you know I use a PSI Power box and I like it. However I put it behand a manual switch and a small piece of electronics so it only switches on at full throttle. If I need more power at half throttle I will give it a little more throttle. Laughing

Your tyres, They don't look to big but Fedima's are heavy. I have 35"simexes for off-road and I love them. Roel

Hi Roel,

Many thanks for all your great feedback.

The tuning chip fitted to our vehicle is a Dastek Unichip.

It has the piggy pack take off loom, and the existing rover ecu is mounted up high behind the drivers seat.

We did have some oil in the loom, but this was only at Rhe connection to the piggy back, not at Rhe ecu end.

We have cleaned all of the ecu extension loom connectors of oil using brake cleaner, they are all clean and uncontaminated now.

Yes we k ow the Fedima tyres are big and heavy, but all four of them were fitted brand new before collecting the vehicle, so they will get used and changed later to a better quality tyre when they have worn out.

Later today we will try reconnecting the ecu back to the normal position, to see if it gets rid of the hiccups or makes it run any better.

Cheers.

I see you’ve cleaned oil from the ecu plugs but have you put a new injector loom in? Ray

Hi Ray,

No we haven’t done that yet, it’s on the shopping and to do list though.

Thanks for the reminder! 👍👍

So another quick update, we today reconnected the ecu back to the std loom connectors.

Success! The misfire and hesitation has gone.

So started to undo all the tywraps to get the extension looms out with a view to removing the Dastek chip boxes and looms.

Then I found this on the two block connectors going into the Dastek ecu.

Somebody has done a proper bodge, but most importantly two wires were completely hanging out.

After about an hour of trying to remove the pins to re do them, I gave up, for fear of damaging the plastic block.

I resorted to stripping and tinning the wires, and reinstalled them in the block, and pinched the cable clamp part of the clip back over.

They have a nice firm mechanical and strong connection now.

Gave me the car a road test, and my god what a transformation!

I can only assume that the two wires that were hanging out had meant the Dastek ecu was not working properly.

The car now has massive low down pulling power.

The run we had for a few miles also revealed that the jumping misfire has gone too.

So for now as the Dastek seems to be doing it’s job, will leave it connected with the ecu nice and high up out of the way of water when wading and keeping the ecu clean of any oil that might come back.

Thanks to everyone who gave us some many great tips and pointers!

Here’s the connectors with the wires hanging out!

Have the same one Port-a-sol, made in Ireland - three times the price from snap-on, wish I knew that before I bought mine!
