New radio required - DAB?
My Land Rover radio in the 2011MY Defender is dying, it will not stay tuned to a preset station

So the holder of purse strings has graciously sanctioned "Yet more expenditure on that bloody Land Rover" purchase of a new radio.

The budget is max. £100.00 all in - "Not a penny more". Now upped to £175 having looked at aerial prices Whistle

I'll fit it myself.

CD's and i-player type gismos are not required and the Garmin answers the phone - simple radio only.

We spend up to 3 months a year touring Europe so is it worth getting a DAB radio and (I think) aerial?

What do you use/suggest and how well does it work in Europe as well as the UK?

Do DAB radios also tune into FM?

Thanks in advance for your help Thumbs Up[/b][/b]

FM channels are also broadcast on DAB but tbh I think you will struggle to get a DAB head unit and aerial for £100, decent aerials alone can almost cost that Confused

Edit: There do appear to be some dodgy cheap ebay jobs available for ~£50 and you could get a stick on aerial for about a tenner so it is possible but I wouldn't trust those cheap Chinese units personally Matt.

I got this, and a £15 DAB aerial, also from Halfrauds. I cant fault either unit or aerial.

I know it isn't FM as well, but I am not travelling abroad so it doesn't matter to me that much.

I have a pioneer mechless DAB FM radio with aux and USB inputs that cost less than £100 a couple of years ago which was coupled to a small DAB magmount which sat on the Brownchurch rack nicely.

It all worked really well till I knocked the magmount to pieces whilst loading the roof rack one day.

I subsequently fashioned a DAB antenna from a small Ham radio antenna and mount kit and it has been even better. Thumbs Up 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

First thing I would investigate is why the original one is playing up. Is the windscreen seal leaking onto the back of it?

You don't want to fit a new one, and have it go pop a few weeks later.

Spent the morning investigating the original radio (thanks for your suggestion zsd-puma) and found that the windscreen was leaking after last nights prolonged down pour, and looks as if it's been leaking for some time.
So all on hold until the weather improves and the leak is "fixed" - then it looks good for a DAB+ with FM using an aerial splitter as suggested above.
Thanks for all your replies - much appreciated by a techno-phobe.

Interested in doing exactly the same so following this with interest. As ever all the replies are really helpful. Do any if the new radios have a LW function? I would love to keep that option open for Test Match Special. The reception for 198 KW on my current radio is so bad it means my better half can't bear to listen to it! Even worse when I accelerate. Or if I am using the cigarette lighter to charge my phone. Any thought in either of those issues? The previous owner did fit one of the hands free parrot devices and a couple of power points in the boot so maybe he did sone dodgy wiring! I think I will remove the parrot and look to get a hands free through the radio.

Don’t bother with DAB.
I installed a good DAB radio in my Defender. I’ve since discovered that 3G and 4G mobile coverage has more comprehensive coverage than DAB, in UK and overseas.

My solution therefore is to use my mobile phone, with a number of free radio apps, (e.g BBC iPlayer for radio etc.) and connect this to the radio via Bluetooth. Much better than DAB, greater choice of stations, excellent reception of UK stations when travelling in Europe and ease of use. No DAB aerial needed. Also don’t need a DAB radio, any decent radio with Bluetooth will do the job. And radio broadcasts use very little data from your data plane with your mobile phone company so you won’t be running up a large phone bill doing this -and no roaming charges in most of Europe.

Finally, this will also give you a hands-free use of you mobile phone through the radio and only one item to maintain charge for.

Hope this helps.

Use an aerial splitter, inexpensive, effective and reliable. Lots of information in this thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58852

Then keep an eye our for a DAB unit. Halfords had some good clearance deals when I was looking recently, I ended up picking up a bargain on ebay. Handsfree, DAB, USB etc...

Cheers

Got a mobile phone?

Got a radio with Bluetooth or Aux input?

Then you don’t need to go near Halfords or anywhere else. No Dab Radio or Dab Aerial or Aerial Splitter needed, (although the splitters do work very well)

If you answered yes to all of the above, then you’re all set.

Internet Radio is waiting for you. ..... Drink Coffee, Talk to Strangers and Take Photos.
