Thank you ZSD Puma for educating me on this issue.
You would think then that somebody would be able to manufacture a shaft with tighter tolerances to partially eliminate this problem for sure it would be a good seller.

Ashcroft already do an upgraded adaptor shaft kit. The standard ones aren't too bad when new, the problem is they aren't properly lubricated so the splines fret, which means they get progressively more sloppy until they fail. The Ashcroft kit solves the lubrication issue.

Land Rover themselves also offer one piece rear half shafts that get rid of more slack in the drive train, but they're expensive and were only fitted as standard in about the last year of production.

Thanks again ZSD-Puma for your information.
I tried the faster gear change 1st to second when cold and I had perfect gear changes so that problem is solved and I will stick with the MTF gear box oil. 2016 Defender Landmark 90

Glad that trick works for you too! I still don't understand why it works, but it does.

As stated above I really don't rate the R380 at all highly, Landrover was never very good at gearboxes but the R380 was surely one of the worst. Ford on the other hand was always very good at gearboxes (especially in the '60s and '70s).

I went for genuine LR, not cheap but thought it may be worth going for. Have not used it yet so unable to comment on the performance.
