It’s been a while, a few things done / to be done to the Defender.
I’ve noticed the classic symptoms of clutch failure on my Defender, so after much deliberation have decided to go for a Clutchfix HD1 with the release bearing, slave etc. I’ve also been trying to find the source of the most annoying knock from the rear. It turns out the rear nearside shock / shock bush has failed allowing play even when the wheels are on the ground and compressed, so clearly needs attention. I’ve also recently been suffering more and more with a cough / splutter on light/ part throttle around 2k revs. It seemed to go when I replaced the VCv and relearn but recently come back even worse. I wondered if the vcv had failed but thought it unlikely. I started looking into EGRs and thought about taking apart to clean it as I often get the MaF code throwing engine light which is classic for EGR. In the end I decided to have he EGR switched off via my map and fitted an EGR blank to be on the safe side. I’m so glad I did! I could not believe the difference it has made; smoother all round, and absolutely no spluttering or puffs of smoke. So despite my EGR appearing healthy and never throwing any codes, and the famous chugga-chugga noise on switch off, it was clearly misbehaving a lot and causing me all kinds of headaches! I’ve also recently invested in a few more security layers, and have a few more to fit. I’ve put too much effort into this to have some scroat take it away without at least a Fight! Clutchfix HD1 and release bearing, slave etc all fitted yesterday and it feels (and sounds) totally different.
My mechanic said he's never seen springs so bad in the clutch he took out. It has loads of meat left on the friction plate but all the springs were just rattling around! The release bearing was bad but not totally shot. anyway, very pleased. Quite a big expense (again) but worth it for piece of mind. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html |

Good choice with the clutchfix HD1 I replaced mine with one so much better!

We recently spent a weekend up in the Lakes and Dales doing a 4x4 tour, first time off roading for me. It was an experience, the car took a bit of a beating so some things need fixing
I've ordered some Bilstein B6 shocks which are going to be fitted next weekend, hopefully solve my rear shock knocking noise! Click image to enlarge

Not a chance
I must say the Bilstein shocks have improved the ride no end. My only regret is I waited this long ! I did have a little Issue; the TC kept coming on when pulling away from a stop. Turned out to be a rear sensor had ever so slightly come out, maybe by a couple of MM. maybe the rattle gun used to fit the shocks shook it out but glad I found it quickly and it was an easy fix My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html |

I’ve been having some thoughts about replacing the defender with a van and a mid sized car which would suit my lifestyle a little better these days.
I think my Defender must have sensed this and spat its dummy out, leaving me stranded on the m4 at 7am last Tuesday morning; sheering its intermediate shaft and taking the gearbox output flange with it
To make things worse I was on my way to a race track, so had my trailer etc with me. I waited over 4hrs for a suitable recovery vehicle to come to my aid! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I had everything taken back to my local LR specialist and I went to hire a van but unfortunately by this time it was too late to turn around and make it in time Click image to enlarge With the failure being diagnosed as I suspected, I also took the opportunity to have a Wheel wobble investigated; which turned out to be a failed swivel bearing. Another not so regular check in!
Treated myself (or the defender!) to a full set of black security hinges for all doors, tailgate and bonnet. I also got a set of billet door handles without locks for another little visual and security touch. I also had the rear 3rd brake light fail, turned out it was the element in the rear screen corroding, fairly common as I understand - so a new rear screen and finished off with a nice LED 3rd Brake light! I always try to upgrade something when things like that happen, kinda softens the blow! Last week, I took the Defender to my local independent for a service and annual MOT. A clean bill of health and a clean sheet MoT pass - satisfying given the effort I put in to keeping her tip top! All that said, unfortunately I’ve decided to put the Defender up for sale. As my lifestyle has changed over the last few months and I don’t have a need for it, more just a small run around / town car.
