Hello.
I notice that when my geriatric friends are hauling themselves into the passenger seat they are scratching and denting the sill panel beneath the door. This is a combination of using walking aids, frames and ,(like me), just being old and a bit clumsy. I do not want to go down the chequer plate route as ,personally, I find that all a bit ugly. nor do I want to start drilling holes in places that I will regret later. Does anyone out there have a suggestion of a solution. i do not need rock sliders, something a bit more refined that will not involve me putting Small back on Ebay as she is getting upset by the lack of bids

It won't protect from dents but helicopter tape should resist scratches for a while Ray

Thanks Ray, I tried that a while back and it worked for a while started to look tatty , did not save the dents so off it came. I thought I had seen somewhere a thin aluminium panel that could be put on with doublesided tape that was available suit either 90's or 110's, but like most things I cannot find it again

YRM metal solutions do a replacement sill in stainless steel. You could get this painted to match.
The only other alternative is steps or getting rid of your geriatric friends.  |

I have this too when shooting friends with muddy wellies climb aboard. Drives me crazy. Options seem to be put up with it ( itβs a Defender after all), some kind of protection film or the chequer plating. I go with option A.

What about spraying in something like Line-X supposedly protects and strengthens? If you're not bothered too much about the colour matching, then any decent black shultz stone chip will do the job.
You can have it over painted with your body colour if you like (this is what most modern cars have on their sills), but the colour will likely wear through over time. Decent paint protection film should last a fairly long time so long as it's applied properly. But it'll still get scratched on the surface. You've said you don't need rock sliders, but they are another solution, because you can get galvanised ones. Which won't scratch as it's self healing. As a last resort the sills aren't difficult to remove. You could just get a body shop to respray them every few years, shouldn't cost much. |

Assuming you've got the standard tubular side steps, then Discomogs' suggestion of swapping for the individual fold-up steps is a good one. They're slightly lower and have a back to them so that feet don't go near the cills when used.
