sump removal TD5 strange finding
Dear all,

many thanks for the great forum and wealth on information!

Currently I am in the process of building our overland Defender and doing relatively simple tasks myself.
I read on the internet about the dreaded TD5 oil bolt and figured we would not like to be stuck somewhere in the desert because of this easy to fix problem.

Removed the sump etc etc, the only thing is I have found a strange item in the flywheel housing


Its a 4x4cm item which was found near the square drain plug on the bottom of the housing(inside).

Does any of you pro's have an idea what this could be? I have not been able to track it down and I am very curious about what this could be.... Shocked Shocked Shocked

Oh wow many thanks!

It seems that I am unable to check it without removing the gearbox and flywheel, am I correct?

Do you know the purpose of the item and can do I without safely? Did not have any trouble driving, so maybe an old one?

To check you will need to split the bell housing from the engine and would make a good time to check the rear output seal, clutch and flywheel Rolling Eyes

It must be a spare one, surely? It can't have fallen into the sump from inside the bellhousing?? Darren

Thanks all for thinking with me! I have found a clear image on how the item is fixed and it seems that it is crucial in keeping the fork in the proper place.

I have ordered a small flexible camera to look behind the flywheel, with a little luck the item is still on and I dont have to remove the clutch and gearbox.

Fingers crossed.

Is there a simple way to replace the clutch? On the net I can find only the two following possibilities.

- remove all interior flooring and use a crane inside the car to move the gearbox after removing crossmembers / handbrake
- remove or turn the engine using a crane

Both seem like quite a lot of work for replacing the clutch.

Checkend with the camera, item is not there but the clutch is firm in place.
Will take the risk and leave it now untill the next clutch replacement.
