TD5 '02 Throttle pedal dead??
Afternoon all,
Last weekend having a lovely drive out, the ofender lost all throttle response... just dropped to idle and Engine Management Light came on. Shocked
Pulled over, engine off - back on, EML had gone out and off we trotted as normal... for another mile or so till it did the same again.. but this time, no reset when you turn off and on again.
Now, when you turn the key, the EML comes on, goes off for say 4 seconds then back on again, engine started or not.
She starts up fine and settles to a nice tickover and will drive on that tickover but nothing else.
We crawled into the next town at 12mph on idle and ended up with the low loader of shame home. Embarassed

(Broke down in Dereham - whilst waiting for RAC a Gent in a red 90 stopped to see if all ok, and stayed for a chat - think his name was Marshall - if on here - many thanks!!!! Thumbs Up )

So.... I suspect it's the Throttle pedal. (New one ordered - hope the Censored turns up soon)
The RAC bloke did a diagnostic and it showed up driver demand errors.
The three tracks on live data as we moved the pedal looked to be (from memory - should have filmed it)
1 = 0.7 - 4.6
2 = 4.5 - 0.23
3 = 2.5is all the time (no change)
I have checked with a multi-meter all the wires between pedal and ECU, all good.
Have cleaned the black & red plugs on the ecu with contact cleaner and checked for stray wires. All good.
Plan is to fit the new pedal and also make and run a new seperate loom from pedal to ECU just as belt and braces.

Question My questions to the assembled brains are...
1/ Have I got the right track on this problem do you think?
2/ Will a new pedal fix it or will I also need to get the fault cleared?

Cheers!! James

I think that the 2.5V for track 3 is not good. However you have a 2002 model do you have the 2 or 3 track pedal?
if you have a 3 track the voltage should also change from high to low.

I am not sure what the problem is. But also improve the earth for the ECU this helps with a lot off problems. Roel

Mine failed once.
A quick spray with wd40 fixed it.

I tried half a can on the day... this is more than a WD/40 or duct tape job I fear.. Laughing

I went out today and as the connectors had arrived ran a new cable (trailer wire) from the pedal to the ecu, all new connectors etc. Also ran a new earth from battery to ECU.

Bloody things up and running again... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Will fit the new pedal anyway when it arrives, but it seams to go much better then before already!

Hi jimmyvonk

Interesting thread ..... i've been having the same kinda problem over here

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58932.html

Have to say i suspect you have sorted it by changing the cable between the peddle and the ecu, for what it's worth I think the looms gets fractured somehow as it moves along the gearbox tunnel.

fingures crossed for your solution ......

Hi Martin,

Yes, sounds very similar. Sad

Changing the loom (All new from pedal to ECU, done with trailer cable and new plugs crimped and soldered, all joints heat shrunk, run down over right chassis rail in it's own conduit.) and adding extra earths direct from battery to ECU got us up and running again and the EML cleared.

Then the bloody thing happened again. Big Cry

So have now fitted a brand new throttle pedal assembly. (New spring is tough on the leg!)

Hopefully this will sort it - have some long trips planned for this week so see how it goes and let you know.

Have some time to work on it Thursday so plan to clean up all the earths and double check a few other bits.

Need to invest in a Nanocom or similar I think as all this electrical stuff is the devils work! Evil or Very Mad

Good luck - we will get there I hope! Smile

Hi jimmyvonk

Oh no !!! I feel for you on this one .....

You do appear to have had a far more consistent issue than mine ... mine has always reset it'self in a couple of minutes .....

Your one could well be foot peddle related since I've heard that the tracks wear out at one end and that's what fools the ecu, your looks pretty perminant when it dies but a hawkeye or such would be most useful to you

I have a spare peddle that I know is fine as I've tried it for some time on my one which you can borrow if that helps.

I also have a Hawkeye and it's jolly good, certainly lets me look at all this data live and is nicely built, I think it was £250 odd but not much more.

Roel is a man to ask on this one - he knows what he's doing .... what have you got Roel ??

I don;t beleiev you will need to clear the fault as such to make the system work - clearing the fault will remove the ecu's awareness of the fact that the last time it had issues one of them was the Driver Demand

good luck ..... TD5 90 in Hertfordshire

Do you really want to know what I use for diagnostics? I paid a whole €50,- for it. Still interested?

yep .... more than ever ....

I had one of these ...

http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/

really nice and works a treat on my mates TDCI ... seven configurable pages of data live out of the ecu

fit's behind his dash real nice .....

does not work at all with a TD5 Big Cry

I'd really like something hooked up all the time ideally with configurable pages .... been thinking about writing code to do this, I work for a software company and me and another chap are up for this.

I have a Hawkeye which is great but big and clunky

Do tell me more about your 50 euro solution !!!

Regards

That is a nanocom version 1. Probably older then my 90. Twisted Evil But I have to admit it works and you can see life data in different pages only the serial port is brokes so I cannot connect it to a laptop. That is why it was cheap. Roel

I have a spare TD5 pedal going cheap if anybody needs one, as l replaced my pedal a few years ago thinking it was the cause of the hesitation/zero response when first starting the engine, but it was the MAF.
Note the pedal costs £140+VAT new!
I know this pedal is OK as replacing it did not cure the fault.
It’s a 2005 so the later 3 track one l believe. It’s only done 24,000 miles.

UPDATE.

Just done about 300 miles over the last few days and not a problem.

So as far as this problem is concerned - new pedal, new wiring and extra earths have fixed it. Very Happy

NEXT!!!! Whistle

I hope you didn’t pay full retail for the pedal!
