hearing the turbo going up en down
Good evening,

I am new to this forum and my English is not great, but I still want to try and join this forum.

I have just bought a 110 Puma 2.4 and I have to get used to the strange sounds. Normally I drive in a 110 300 tdi with sounds familiar to me, engine noise and engine noise.

What really strikes me is the noise of the turbo what is going up en what is going down. ( there is also a whistle in it)

Is it normal that you can hear this turbo sound inside te car?

I checked for leaks at het compressor side. Noting their.

Thank you for reading

Hi Mario .. welcome to the forum.

There are 2 things to look for:

1. Check the intercooler pipes for a hole. Normally happens where the intercooler pipe rubs on the steering column shaft coupling
2. Check the joint between the turbo and the exhaust manifold. The faces of both can warp if they get very hot causing them to leak and whistle. If that’s happening you should be able to see soot. You may need to remove the turbo heat shield to see.

Hi Mario,

Off course you can Pm me in dutch Laughing

No it’s not normal.

As previous poster your exhaust manifold can be warped. But also check the studs Or the bolts between the turbo and the exhaust manifold have a tendency to come loose.

And check the connection between the turbo and the exhaust a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Hi Carrobay,

Thank you for your answer.
The pipes and the intercooler are new.
Tomorrow I will check your second point to check. I hope to see no root over there.
Thank you for helping me.
Have a nice evening

Mario

Hi Tdi4

I,m not allowed to use the pm! If i try to use PM, i get this message "Sorry, you are not allowed to send private messages. It is likely that you have not yet reached 3 posts on the forum - this is an anti-private message spam feature."

It,s to dark now to check the bolts at the exhaust manifold. I do it tomorrow.

I was happy to hear, that it is not normal that you can hear clearly the turbo inside the car.

Have nice evening.

Mario

Today I went to a 4x4 garage. Conclusion the turbo is whistling.
I have Checked the blades of the turbo. This seems to be fine. No play on the shaft. Continue this research this week

As a comment...

When my 2.2 Puma is first started, and driven the first 2-3km, I cane hear the turbo 'whistling' up and down. I had this on my previous Puma so I reckon its normal.

However, once the car is warmed up, I cannot hear any turbo noise.

Cheers,

We had this once with a Puma 2008 ... searched and searched and there was a tiny hole under the jubilee clip that hold the intercooler hose to the pipe Fixing Land Rovers in rural Guanacaste

I have the same sound with a cold and warm engine.

Most people (experts) that I let listen to the turbo hear a whistle, but do not disturb the whistle.

Update of my search

Today I visited two 4x4 experts.

The first expert heard the whistle, but did not know if this was normal for this type of turbo,s.

The second expert was a 100% Land Rover expert. He did not hear anything special.
He thought the whistle sounded was normal in the turbo

Tomorrow I try to visite a Turbo expert.

it was under jubilee clip nº3 in this page near the intercooler . Whistled more at about 2500 rpm Fixing Land Rovers in rural Guanacaste
