Td5 starting problem in cold weather

Hi everyone, my first post and I'm after some help.

My 2003 Td5 has starting issues when the weather gets really cold. Usually starts perfectly, but over the last week or so it's gradually gotten worse. Now it takes a lot of cranking, might fire up and then die, but will eventually start. Once it starts it runs fine, and if I only leave it parked up for a few hours it will start fine.

I had a similar problem a few months ago, but then the fuel pump died, so I assumed that was the problem. I replaced that, and the fuel regulator. Its run fine ever since.

Any ideas?

sounds like injector washers to me. Chances are carbon from the blow by killed the last pump. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

2005 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Bonatti Grey

Try putting your finger on the fuel pump relay (rear yellow one under the seat). If you can hear it vibrating it's either time for a new battery or you need to check the earth connections. The voltage sometimes drops below the level required to hold the relay in so the fuel pump isn't working.

If it starts fine after the engines warmed up I'd go for glow plugs. Mine need doing too

Update. Glow plugs changed and its no better.

Possible injector washers then, check for raised oil level or smell of diesel in the oil. Also check for oil in the red ecu plug as it costs nothing to do. Are there any other symptoms maybe gurgling noise from fuel pump stil? Ray

The fuel pump is noisier than it was, but its not that bad. I had it booked in for the injector seals, but the mechanic advised me that it was probably glow plugs.

I've been leaving it inside our unit, and it always starts fine. When I take it home and leave it outside, it might fire up on second attempt. If its outside and the weather is really cold, it might take 10 attempts.

Ive already bought the injector seals, so I might just change them anyway.

You could leave it out in the cold then do a fuel purge before you start it to see if it starts better. If it does it could point to injector washers. Ray

If it are the glow plugs you Will see gray smoke coming out the exhaust. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

Just thought I'd finish this off..

Changing the glow plugs made absolutely no difference.

Changed the injector seals on Monday and this morning the Landy started first time. Also, the first second or so of the fuel pump running is a lot quieter.

I'll post if anything changes, thanks for your help/advice on this chaps
