Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Plan is to keep my existing Defender. Even if there will be a new one, and if that is going to be appealing, I would not buy one for many years, at least until assembly quality and reliability would be proven.
When I took a very good look at the Geneva car show at assembly quality, as well as materials quality of the new D5 and the Velar, it is shocking to see how shoddy they are if compared with for instance the new Volvos.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I thought that looked quite impressive until I noticed the free-wheeling hubs on the front. How yesterday! It isn't even full-time 4WD. Shocked

The Penman had an automatic gearbox similar to that which I think was put into the heavy WMIK/Snatch LR variants (long after my time!). It was also available in left and right hand drive. 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent

It has, I am even surprised myself. I think it is the engineering content and ethos which has tipped the scales.

I am certain that it will be unaffordable (to me, at least) though.

My Plan A, and Plan A, and Plan A is that my next vehicle will be a hybrid.

The writing was on the wall a long, long time ago for diesel engines in private cars, anybody who bought one within the last few years was VERY short-sighted. And cities will soon be out of bounds for anything other than electric.

But the long journeys I do will never be accomplished in an electric-only vehicle, so hybrid it is. JLR may or may not develop a hybrid powertrain for the next “Defender”, for me that will be the deciding factor.

In any case, the punitive taxes and first-year VED rates of any new Defender will surely make many of us think twice about buying one?

I do agree that leccy is the future, but imho until battery tech means significantly longer term battery lifespan, I just dont see it as a viable option and its a false economy long term.

For example, a mobile phone is a battery tech device that is discharged and recharged each day and as I understand it, vehicle batteries are currently based on the same lithium ion tech. ( teslas batterys look just like normal batteries all packed together ). MObile phone batteries etc etc all wear out each time they go through their charge cycle ... net result is a noted degraded performance after a couple of years. ( My laptop is about 1yr old and its battery is reporting 14% wear so far ... so its lost 14% of its capacity ).

Can you imagine that happening to a car ? i.e. You're original 200mile range is now 180 miles after a year. 160 the year after etc etc etc ... how long will it take to get to a point where the battery is not usable for your needs, and how much is the cost.

When they come out with a battery tech that lasts for years with minimal degradation, then i'm sold.


( I personally think that when that does, retro-kits for existing vehicles would be a massive market - imagine ripping out the engine block and replacing it with a electric motor and keeping everything else ) -------------------------------

Other than the 5 door evoque all the new land rovers are good, the d5 reminds me of the d3 although it could be better designed and misses some elements of the d4 I like, it will evolve Mike

DVLA plate check says HUE 166 was first registered January 1949. Is it therefore reasonable to think that New Defender will be launched in January next year, not anytime this year, and that LR will run practically no teases in the meantime to minimise the risk of Chinese copycats?
