We put a 2.8 into this almost 10 years ago now and when I was back in Oz in Nov drove it again, it pulled amazingly, probably better than my 05 90. Put good Disco brake server in to stop it, and good radiator. And Disco gear ratios. Given all that, it'll go forever. It did drive, or say on the water gauge, that it was hot for the first few thousand km, then it settled down and pulls like the proverbial. Great engine. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

i run Disco servos too on off roaders, and autos on Defenders, they are much better for repeated heavy braking over the std tdi ones. Cheers

How easy is it to fit a disco brake servo? do you change the master cylinder as well?

Hi Jamie, its simple to change from a nut and bot job, just fiddly doing the clevis pin on the brake pedal.

on my '84 the master cylinder fitted to the Disco Servo, on my '92 it didint and i used both disco servo and m/cylinder

bearmach do a replacement servo that is std part number for defender but is actually a fair bit deeper that takes the std def m/cylinder. Cheers

Is there any advantage to fitting one to a Td5 defender? I assume there is more servo assistance? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

dont know specifically on a td5 as never done it.

there is no greater assistance just more air (well less - greater vacuum) held in the largr res which means you have servo assistance for a great period. not normally needed on a non ABS vehicle but i was running an auto and off road you use the brakes a fair bit on very steep descents, cadence breaking eats servo power so the greater the vacuum capacity of the servo the better. Cheers
