Heavy duty or single piece half shafts?
So, with the prospect of replacing the rear drive members only a year after they were last replaced, I am wondering what route to go down.
I’ve done searches on here and a few different ideas come up. I suppose my options are:-
1]. Fit standard drive flanges and give a good coating of grease.
2]. Fit heavy duty (possibly Ashcroft) drive flanges and grease up.
3]. Replace the half shafts with HD ones and fit HD flanges, remove the inner oil seals and let them be oil lubricated.
4]. Fit one piece half shaft / drive flanges and forget about it.

Any other set ups that I haven’t mentioned?
On the one piece setup, what are my options for these. I have read that I can fit a set from a 300 Disco, or there are genuine LR items which cost a small fortune. Any others making a GOOD single piece unit?

The 90 is used mainly as a car with next to no off reading. Towing a caravan and carrying dogs are as much as it does for work. So I’m looking for what others have done to eliminate the problem of worn drive flanges and recommendations of what to avoid doing.

My standard 110 drive shafts with the separate drive flanges lasted about 2 years. LR replaced them under warranty with the late-spec one piece shafts, so far they’re still going strong after another 2 years.. happy so far! 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

I'd replace with the one-piece shafts if I could, one less place to have slop.

Sadly I have a Salisbury back axle, so I need to replace that as well to swap shafts!

In 220,000 miles I got through 2 sets of standard 2-piece, 1 set of Ashcroft HD, and am now running genuine one-piece. The latter are favourite but, strewth, do they cost a lot!

I think, I'm not 100% sure, that the 110 and 130 have a different part number to the 90 spec one piece shafts, But I was wondering if disco 1 piece (or 90) shafts can be fitted to a 110? (With a Rover/P38 diff axle ,naturally)

Or are they not strong enough?

I went one piece and the clunking noises have stopped and not returned after 10k hard miles. Previously was going through a set as a service item every 2/3yrs. 1951 80" S1 2.0

Not seeing a lot of love for the two piece setup either standard or HD. So, with that in mind, what's the most cost effective way to get 1 piece shafts? I really don't want to go down the new LR route as my pockets are not nearly deep enough. Who makes a single piece unit that is also a GOOD unit, or is second hand the way to go? Plenty Disco half shafts on eBay, is this a viable long term fix? Also, does any 1 piece Disco shaft fit?

I had 24 spline single piece in my CT Disco. I broke some due to my Detroit locker.
Also they don't like bearing play.
I have a feeling that the 2 piece shafts are stronger as the one pece shafts broke at the flange side and my 2 piece shaft break at the diff side most off the time.
I have Aschroft with HD flanges in the rear off my 90. and they last. I put gear oil in the caps regularly. Roel

I had a water/mud ingress problem which annoyingly wrecked an ATB and caused fretting to the diff end of the shafts. Although usable I replaced the with one-piece when I repaired the axle.

If you have a 90, second hand disco 300tdi shafts are fine. They are a slightly narrow diameter that the two piece shafts but the same diameter where the seals run.
It needs to be from a 300tdi disco or 300tdi defender. The disco 200 used a different halfshaft and early ones were 12 spline diffs.

I have run them in five different Defender td5 and Puma 90 I have owned over the past 12 years with no issues. They were fine for the disco v8 back then.

You could probably pull a pair out of a scrap 300 disco for a tenner!
