I'm aware of the kits that involve removing the dash and inserting additional vents into the ends to demist the side windows, but has anyone here fitted these surface mount alternatives? Are they any good? How do they look once fitted?

The adjustable lower vents that I do if pointed in the right direction will demist the side windows

These are both flawed, but they are also better than the standard setup.
I went for the Mudstuff version in the end. Bit of a fiddle to fit, but works well once the heater has warmed up. Always thought that the being able to re-circulate the warmer inside air would make an awesome modification... But how...!?! At one point X-Eng were looking at fitting an electric element to the heating system to speed up the process of de-misting, but I do not know how far he got. |

I've toyed with that idea, but 1kw of heating would be required which combined with headlights and other stuff would exceed the alternator output or put it under strain inevitability causing it to fail prematurely. A second alternator and mounting kit is £200 plus another £50 for wires and heating elements which is more than a sleeve... Also remember, the hotter the inside of the car, the more the unheated windows will mist up. The only true way to demist is with a 20,000+ btu AirCon system  |

Sadly not on an aircon equipped Td5. The aircon blower is good for circulating dry air, but it always cools. Maybe a simple modification to the switch wiring could allow the fans to run without engaging the compressor... Does anyone have the schematic handy? Last edited by Intercept on 7th Mar 2018 1:52pm. I had a set of the dash-top demisters on my old TD5 and they were pretty good. Ultimately though, either them or the Mud solution are limited by the weedy heater fan. Darren

Ooo cheeky recirculating system plan... The aircon condenser on Miffy rotted away, so removed it last summer. I do mean to replace it but it is just not a priority. However adapting it to recirculate could be an interesting project. |

Correction: the Td5 aircon controls do allow the fan to be used without engaging the compressor. Obviously this won't dry the circulated air, but a 5 mile lunchbreak drive with the heater on max into the footwells saw the aircon vent air temperature hit 20C which was 5C higher than the cabin ambient. Hardly toasty, but the coolant temp gauge was still only just above the blue zone at the end of the test run.
Engaging the compressor will dry the air as well as cooling it, so might have some side-window demisting ability with the aircon vents aimed sideways. But the cabin would be very draughty and the wife would complain of frozen knees. Experiments continue... |

Just bought a set of grafftys adjustable lower vents and they do a brilliant job of clearing the side windows
