Options for watching movies in the car
What economic options are there for the kids watching movies in the back of the car?

I know you can get built-in DVD players with either headrest screens or the central screen that swings down from the roof, but these are costly. I'm thinking maybe a tablet on the back of each headrest (you can get some good holders) with either Bluetooth or wired headsets. Anyone have any good suggestions?

We have done trialled an Ipad and it made for a peaceful journey, except the Ipad was just jammed between the seats and kept falling out.

The only problem with this is our Amazon Prime downloads only last for 48 hours so ok for the journey out but stuck coming home. Any other options for downloading and keeping films on the tablet?

What cheap but good tablets would you recommend?

Thank you. Bow down James

I bought a set of Freelander 2 headrest screens for a good price from Nene just before they went bust (explains why they were back at a decent price) and inserted them into the headrests. Fitted a cyclone media player just under the steering wheel and now have about 50 kids films ripped from dvds on tap. Wireless headphones work with them. It now means my previous solution of iPad 2 holders are defunct, but kids kept ripping out cables by treading on them.

We use one of these with an iPad mount on the top. Split jack headphone adapter and all is well for our bunch in the back. 1951 80" S1 2.0

We must be old fashioned - ours use books!

Might also be due to being married to a librarian..

Thanks All.

ScottM - I wish!

FM - definitely an option.

Inigo - I like the sound of this. I guess you'd need more than just the screens shown here...? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Freelan...3641.l6368

The connector doesn't look like it would just plug straight into a media player?

I have found the complete kit for around £250. But for this sort of money, two tablets may get more use?? James

That's exactly the kit I got. I had to butcher the Puma headrests a bit. I already had a blue sea fuse box for other accessories under the drivers seat so ran all the cables there.

I got a media player like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sumvision-Cyclone...B005EX8XKW and added it to the little tray under the left hand side of the drivers steering wheel. This way it can still be controlled with the remote control. Then just had to get a couple of extension cables from Maplin/Ebay/Amazon to get power to the media player and video signal from the media player to the connectors for the screens (now under drivers seat). Loosely based on the guide on disco3.co.uk: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/headrest-sc...2+headrest but I think the pictures have gone.

Only problem is that it is powered all the time - screens have on/off button, but if it is not checked when leaving the vehicle, it could be left on. I was going to make one bank of my fuse box ignition switched, but haven't got around to it yet.

Many thanks for the reply and information. You say you had to butcher the Puma headrest? Did you put the screen in the Puma headrests? Don't the Freelander headrest fit the Puma? Would obviously have to get reupholstered but don't fancy butchering my existing headrests.

I still wonder if two Kindle Fire HD with headrest mounts may be more practical? Kids can then use anywhere. The latter may be a reason to buy the headrest screens! Confused James

No, Freelander headrests didn't fit (I was hoping they would).

Leather cover peels off, foam underneath hacked about a bit, screens popped in, leather cover put back on with square hole cut in it, bezel covers cuts. Looks OK, except I have a small cable, cable tied to one of the headrest verticals before it disappears inside the seat (puma verticals are not hollow). I'll take a photo this evening, it looks OK. Problem I found with headrest mounts was charging the ipad/tablet/whatever. Even when I fitted an additional power socket in the rear, the trailing cables always got trodden on or pulled out or just went missing.

It seems to be beyond anyone to charge the tablets in advance of a journey.

i contemplated this but also wanted something i could swap between vehicles. in the end we bought two 7" units that had the option to play their own DVD/CD/Media Card, came with bluetooth headphones, games and a remote, and linked (hardwire) to the other unit so both could watch same DVD, about £100 each, 3 years ago, will look up the name of them when i get car back (tree fell on the roof so its in for repair)

no hassel to set up, came with own mounting system and plug and play. i wouldnt bother with hassle of mounts for others and power leads etc etc. Cheers

Inigo thank you, that looks really good. I much prefer the built in screens as they look so much more professional but looking at cost and hassle I think tablets will be the way to go.

Thanks JST appreciate that. I wonder what the advantage of DVD headrest screen is over a tablet like a Kindle Fire HD for £80?

I'm thinking a tablet could get used anywhere and therefore be more versatile unless I'm missing something?

Thanks all appreciated. James
