2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Santorini Black

Puma swivel leaking - never done one before

My 2010 90 XS had an advisory regarding a leaking swivel (sphere) seal and I would like to get it sorted. I’m fairly handy with the spanners but never done one before and would appreciate some guidance please.

Are the oil seals all the same or different on pumas?
How hard/easy is it and do I need any special tools?
Is it one shot grease or ep90 to refill?

I’m a bit short of time at the moment and was thinking of asking my inde to do it but I will do it myself if it’s not too much drama.

I did it the long way in, but changed a bunch of stuff on the way through (pins, CVs, swivel, discs, bearings, seals, 2nut system etc.) - if you're doing just the swivel seal then I think you can just pull the full assembly, save yourself the hassle - quite a heavy thing to deal with though.

Either way you'll need the appropriate bi-hex spanners for the axle bolts as a 1/2" drive wont fit in there. Also the axle/swivel gasket.

Sometimes the seal retainer bolts are snappy snappy, careful with them

One shot for me, no reason really.

Oh yeah, the front calipers can be left hooked up to the brake hydraulics and left hanging on some cord wrapped around something appropriate, you can save a lot of time there

Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thanks for that. Is there an appropriate kit I should buy which includes the parts you mention? I Would prefer to get it stripped and reassembled in the same day.

If time isn't on your side, and you are happy with a short to medium term fix until you have more time and the weather improves, you can replace the swivel seal without stripping the hub and swivel down.

You can very carefully cut the new oil seal and when fitting you keep the cut at 12 o'clock. Obviously you also have to cut the seal retaining ring. Personally for a few quid I'd buy a new retaining ring also, and I cut that at about 2 o'clock. I bought stainless steel and replaced the set screws also.

I fitted one of my swivel seals in this manner, and it's been bone dry since (and passed the MOT).

Of course the leak could generally indicate wear or issues elsewhere and you or your Indy would benefit from having a closer look.

Take care when ordering as there are slightly different seals and retaining rings - ask me how I know.....
I don't know for sure, but I think the differences are between the TD5 and Puma.

One shot grease is the way to go
