2.2 engine 'hunting' on startup idle
My 2.2 engine doesn't sound quite right to me when you start it from cold. It starts just fine, but when idling for the first 30 seconds - 1 minute sounds like it is hunting slightly, and you can see the revs pulsing slightly too. There is no smoke produced, everything else seems absolutely normal and the car pulls away and drives just fine at all times.

Is this normal or something to add the list when it visits the dealers shortly?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Not sure if related but my old mans 07 l322 was doing the same, turned out to be a dodgy EGR valve.

VCV possibly, although I do wonder how many good ones have been swapped out unnecessarily ... (and how many dud ones remain installed!).

I know that on mine the occasional idle hiccup is only apparent when AC is on, took a while to figure that one out. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thanks all, I’ll mention it to the dealer. Fuel is whatever is best priced and to hand so it’s had a mix of branded and supermarket-it doesn’t seem to make a difference

I have noticed the past couple of days that mine was doing it too (2015 my) i only use premium diesel (v-power diesel or BP Ultimate)

It is very slight but just about noticeable.

^^^^My MY2015 does this as well. Run on premium fuel. I actually notice it more at 'in between temperatures' - not when freezing cold, and not when nice and hot - but in-between these two.... LR have tried software updates which may have helped a bit, but very occasionally I still see the revs fluctuate on idle. My independent didn't think it was VCV and thought most likely to be software related. His words were.... 'its not a Mercedes'..... so I'm not pursuing this anymore, as it runs great and disappears as soon as I blip the throttle. Please let me know if you resolve this. thanks. Jerry

Do you do a lot of short trips? I find m7 2.4 is noticeably smoother after its been on a good run. It'll stay that way for a few days until it's had a few short trips again.

Yes, I do lots of short trips which is one of the reasons that I use premium fuel. I understand that the DPF regeneration process needs longer high temp runs, so I minimise the junk deposited by using better quality fuel. I try and get a few longer runs in occasionally to try and help it clean itself. Runs great - just v. occassional slight irratic idle on starting at 'in between' temperatures.

Mine started doing this in winter, with large clouds of white smoke.

Replaced the VCV, and it improved a bit, but didn't go away completely. I did the re-learn, pilot correction, etc., even got the new BAS remap.

My mechanic says the injectors are on their way out even though they were removed, inspected, and sent for testing, which revealed all in spec.

Then summer arrived and the symptoms disappeared, so I will wait until next winter to see what happens... --

maybe need a long run to do the ReGen thing with engine - mine does lots of long runs normally, but I did find that the engine was not as smooth after a week or so of short runs in slow traffic in London... a long drive at 60 back down the M4 and it was right as rain again ! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Just to update this, it’s been to the dealer who said no fault codes showed and every defender he has seen does it. Plenty of warranty time left so will keep an eye on it!

As a further update, the car started choking when throttle was applied on Friday, and eventually cut out and wouldn’t restart. Dealer has proudly said they’ve identified it as the fuel pump, I’m just waiting for a more detailed explanation to see if it was VCV as I suggested when they first had it for two weeks..
