Hi there, alongside my affliction for the green oval products, I’ve always had a quick estate car on the go as ‘sensible family transport’... Volvo 850 R, Saab 9-5 HOT aero, Impreza wrx PPP etc..
Loved all of them in their own way, many flawed but all looked pretty cool in black ( hearses,).. I’ll pretty soon put up for sale my old 911, and to ease its departure I’ve told myself that I need something along the lines of the rs6, it IS a practical car (3 boys, 3 dogs) and yet goes like the wind, love the understated look of them, and they sound fantastic. I’m not that naive to think that all that performance doesn’t come at a price, and Ive looked into how they munch through gearboxes, brakes ( £1400 for 4 discs/pads!) intercoolers etc but I also think a good one could be a smart investment ( look at b5 rs4 Avant prices..) So I guess I’m asking does anyone on here live with one/ know people/ had one? I’m looking at spending £10-12k Click image to enlarge Trouble is I’m struggling to find a black one! They’re all dark or bright blue or silver or grey, I have seen a nice green one though, a bit marmite I know.. Cheers. I ran one for 18 months as it was an itch that needed scratching.
Without doubt the C5 RS6 has to be the ultimate family car Comfortable, understated, spacious and phenomenally quick. Surprisingly fuel consumption wasn't that bad for such a big lump (21-25mpg) but it's the servicing costs that are the crippling cost, as major services are an engine out effort which from memory is booked at 6 hours workshop time. That means your looking at best part of 3 days for a belt change Tyres - very limited options as clearance is literally 2 or 3mm from the front strut. I tried another premium brand that my tyre fitter had on offer (Pirelli from memory) at the same size but you couldn't get a fag paper between the tyre and the strut. I think I was getting 10,000 miles easily from a set though. Suspension system is prone to failing and most will have been swapped at least once, preferably on to coil overs. They eat through front suspension arms as well, so another thing to look for in the service file. Gearboxes are stated as sealed for life, but are running right on the limit of what they can take. Make sure you get to give it the beans from standstill on a test drive to check its moving up the gears OK as the internals block up. Ideally you want one that has evidence of being serviced. I think 700bhp is easily achievable from the engine without too much effort. Personally I'd steer clear of any that have been tuned as a) 450 bhp is plenty for an everyday road car and most importantly b) the gearbox will give up. Biggest issue I found when trying to find one is the number of over priced dogs out there. That said they attract the more discerning hooligan than the RS4 did. I must have looked at at least 12-15 cars before finding the one I purchased. Mileage shouldn't be too much of a concern (it's a 15 year old motor after all) as the V8 is under stressed and the typical Audi build quality shouldnt give any concern. I'm just waiting for the prices to drop further on the C6 model so I can tick off V10 ownership 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Thanks rosco that’s great! Yeah most I’ve perused have been changed to coil overs, most state gearbox service/ overhaul, didn’t know about the engine out for belts I feel it is an itch that needs to be scratched though.. I was thinking about another blobeye Subaru wagon, I could get a real nice 05 with leather etc for £5kand know that they’re pretty bomb proof and simple ( cheap) to fix, also a hoot to drive.. what was the handling like on the rs6?
Many thanks for taking the time for the write up, and also how easy did you find it to sell, I’ve been idly looking for 2-3 months now and I see the same cars still for sale... Cheers Alex 98 300 tdi 90 project 94 Range Rover vogue 4.2 lse 79 911 sc 08 130 double cab utility |

For a big car, it handled like the proverbial to a blanket!!! You barely noticed the size, and you'd have to be driving like a right Richard to get it loose.
I would say a comprehensive service file is an absolute must as it would be easy to skim on service cost which is only going to come back on someone down the line. I bought mine in 2013 as a 52 plate with about 90k on the clock for £8k, perhaps a little too cheap. Service history from new, had been a company car for 3 owners so money no object. Discovered a slight issue with the gearbox when driven hard, but took it to an auto specialist for a good service, and that sorted it. Ran it for 18 months, put about 30k onto it without issue, and dropped it as a part ex for £6k, mostly as it was due a major service, which even at mates rates was going to cost £1000-1500, so didn't really make a loss on it. Kept the private plate that came with it too, worth another £750-1000 The guy I part ex'd it with did um and ah as it wasn't his usual cup of tea, but knew someone to take it off his hands (turned out he lives about three streets from me) who serviced it, chipped/tuned it and put it on eBay, but withdrew it, as I suspect he blew the box out of it. Not found it since on MOT checker so she was probably broken up which would be a shame as she was a really straight car. I do find myself looking occasionally, as I know I wouldn't get any objections from SWMBO on having another 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Must say that as the first cult RS6, it does have a great classic appeal now. Did test one way back in 2005 when it really out did all other estates and was an impressive bit of kit. I think by modern standard of RS6 it will be quite underpowered, so manageable day-to-day, but equally being of an era with fewer driver aids, quite the hooligan. Had a mate who ran one and loved it. He also came from Porsche. However I cannot remember anything about day to day running costs etc. But if my same-era S4, mates' RS3s, RS4s, R8s and Mrs Grenadier's TT are anything to go by, it's not going to Ben cheap, no less so as it's 15 years old. It's the nature of old/premium/both car ownership. I'd say do it, what gave you got to lose Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

i believe there's a pistonheads good user review of one... there's some piping which is a complete pig to get too and notorious for corroding... at a garage its a 2k job i think i recall?
big audi's are the perfect family car, we have a B8 RS4 which in comfort is nice place to be, put it in sport / dynamic its an animal. Fuel is the only thing... even in comfort being driven by a sensible lady it rarely see's 25mpg. |
