Defender 90 puma 2.2 gearbox
Hi there can you please tell me if there is any new solutions to gearbox selection from cold as 1st to 2nd slight crunch, the gearbox is perfect when warm, have just changed gearbox oil using genuine Landrover bot 328 at £24.00 a litre from Marshall Landrover, have put 2.2 litres in gearbox, just wondering if anybody has used any different oils and put in extra oil to cure the problem, I have read about the mt82 gearbox problems on the mustang website and they have used additives to help smooth change.

If you're having that much difficulty I'd suggest you have a gearbox fault and lubrication is not the answer, since the GFT MT82 box is actually pretty good (except in the 'Stang, of course) and should have a smooth albeit not fast shift.

I can certainly say that mine is much better than any previous Landrover gearbox, especially the awful R380 in the Td5 which has probably the baulkiest and worst cold change performance of any gearbox design I have ever driven.

Thankyou for your reply, it is ok if I change from 2nd to 3rd slowly when cold and it is perfect when upto temperature.
This is my first puma so I'm new to Landrovers but I love it great for a bit of shooting. Is the genuine gearbox oil the best one to use and is the answer to change slowly from cold.

There is a gearbox mod adding washes to improve alignment. I think you'll find the thread as a sticky in the Puma section?

I guess out of warranty if not get to checked by dealer?

The nylon ball on bottom on gear stick is known for wearing, worth checking.

Sorry I'm not technically minded, just passing on suggestions to check.

Cheers for your reply I will get it checked as it's just done 50,000 m, I have read a lot of threads about the gearbox being notchy changing from 1st to 2nd from cold and just wondered if people used a different oil or put extra in. Nice looking Landrover you've got I've got a 90 hardtop corris grey.

You can easily check if you need the spacer/washer update by looking down the holes that they are meant to fit in to - if they are (still) aligned well then the spacers wont help your issue (although I guess they'll avoid the potential for the issue they're designed to remedy). Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Never had an issue going from 2nd to 3rd, the only "issue" that I have, is a very slight "snick" going from 1st to 2nd if I change quickly.

Remember it isn't a car and you can't drive it like one! Don't rush the gear change, pause in neutral on the way up, and ideally double de-clutch on the way down.

not sure how long you've had the vehicle / owned one before but I would suggest 1st to 2nd is very much unlike most other modern cars and would suggest if nothing else this does take some getting used ie ensuring there's enough revs and a relatively slow movement from 1st to 2nd - other gears ok. albeit I would suggest the defender much prefers long almost exaggerated movements from one gear to the next ensuring the revs are kept up Thumbs Up

Thank you again for advice, not had it long, Drove it today with slower changes and paused in neutral before changing into 2nd, everything was perfect ,like black wolf said it’s not a car, appreciate all your advice
