The power savings of LED side and tail lamps
Because I was interested basically.

The standard setup draws 2.7A, ignition off, sidelights on.
With them removed it draws 1.1A
With Wipac LEDs fitted it draws 1.2A

That fits in about right with the nominal ratings, 0.4*12=5W for the standard bulbs. The Wipac units are rated at 1W each, the stop and indicators are 2W each.
Measured using a DC clamp ammeter, which has resolution finer than 0.1A but not the accuracy.

How much of a difference does that make? Not a lot really in the grand scheme of things. I guess I now need to fit an LED numberplate light and interior dash lights.

Not a lot to be gained, possibly 1p or something ayear on fuel and less alternator strain. Laughing

I also find it interesting Neutral

Anything that reduces the lead on the battery and alternator, however marginal, has got to be a good thing Thumbs Up

However I'm with Steve on the safety and reliability benefits - in particular the former. The LED lights can be seen from a much greater distance and the reasponse time is far better.

That said, I have strayed slightly off topic! Rolling with laughter

Ahh you forget the MOT savings when the cheeky tester tacks on 3 bulbs at £2.50 "because they where out" even though you fit new ones the night before Laughing

That's the reason I fitted them, I was just curious as to what the power consumption change was.

As it happens, it's also possible to get the Wipac flasher unit to correctly detect LED trailer lights which is something a lot of people say isn't possible. Mine doesn't have the trailer symbol until I plug the trailer in, then it just works as it should do.

They must have updated the new Wipac Relay then, because it didn't detect the trailer at one time but the RDX did.

I don't know but I tend to find LED lights more dazzling than normal bulbs, particularly in fog. Although it's almost certainly down to the cheapness of the LEDs in use and the choice in colour temperature.

One thing Dad commented on whilst driving the L322 several years ago in Scotland was that at night it was very difficult to distinguish what was snow and what was grass on the verge with the BiXenons. I'll admit the light is much more uniform and there's no denying they throw further but colour interpretation is crap.

Can only imagine LEDs headlights are the same given the prospenserity to bluer and bluer lighting. Ed

I find the colour rendering for my speakers is great, it's a white light but no where near as blue as, for example, new Mercedes - which are incredibly blue in comparison.

I don't actually know what the CRI of the Speaker evo2 is but I'd imagine it scores pretty well Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Most for the Defender are around 6000k or what ever it is colour temp.

The Wipac relay at one time definitely didn't used to work with trailer light, but now if it does as mentioned that's good.
That gives you two alternatives.

CRI and Colour temperature are different, The CRI is a measurement of a light source’s accuracy in rendering different colours wheras the Kelvin is the colour temperature of the light source.

You could have two lights with a 6000K colour but very different CRI ratings, generally the better the quality of LED, the higher the CRI Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
