Cracked head
Hi I've just had a knock on the door from my neighbour's son Dan,he is pretty upset he took his 2003 td5 90 to the local LR specialist and has received a call telling him his head is cracked,Dan was hoping it was just needing replacement injectors which he had saved for,he has asked if I could ask you guys for any advice regarding where to get a replacement head,I suggested trying Turners he said his guy had already got a price from them for him Shocked any other recommendations please would be great,he is 20 years old and has worked his socks off to buy his dream car a defender and he is absolutely gutted, any advice please would be gratefully received Thumbs Up many thanks Paul

Hi

Just a word of caution, I had a Discovery in at work which I had tested and diagnosed with a cracked head,
The customer said he would source one and get me to fit it.

He ended up buying a "recon" head from eBay,
When It arrived it looked OK, apart from being painted silver?

I blew all the paint off with an airline, and just revealed an old used head,
I fitted it, and had all sorts of problems with the fuel side of things?
We ended up pressure testing it, and it was worse than the one I had removed!

A long drawn out battle to get his money back occurred,
Turns out it was just some lads breaking motors, painting the parts and selling them as recon units!

I know it doesn't help the situation,
But I would strongly recommend you spend money wisely and source a head from a Reputable supplier.

Hope it all gets sorted soon Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Hello Barneyboy (Dan)

I have a friend who 'treated himself' to a late TD5, that is super tidy and has very low (genuine) mileage, anyway he is an engineer and very useful around anything mechanical, he bought the vehicle running but with a known head problem, after much research he decided to go to Turners, and the fix whilst not cheap, even doing the swap himself, has been successful.

It'll be from either of the major suppliers IMHO whilst more expensive you will get a pukka product, AMC is a reputable manufacturer that should come up when asking the supplier for the brand.

Factor in new head bolts, gaskets, injector washers and O rings (use genuine on those) and fitting kit too. It is a huge lump of money and I'm sorry to hear that but it does happen with the TD5.

Why did he think it needed new injectors, was he getting fuel in the oil? While it can be a faulty injector, it's more likely seals or a faulty head.
Five new injectors will cost near enough as much as a head, the old injectors should be fine (if the fault is the head as the garage have said)

A head swap isn't all that hard to do. I asked a garage to do it but they kept giving me the "will do it next week". So did it myself and that was the first engine I had taken apart.

The injector lining is a known weak spot on the TD5 head, you can get them welded but I wanted to remove and fit over two weekends so went AMC. AMC has a reinforced the injector lining.

I cant believe the mechanic said it would be ok to drive! with fuel leaking into the sump it will dilute the oil and diesel does not lubricate like an engine oil! Can soon end up with a worn out engine or if left too long a run away!

Cheers

Hi Dan has had his Land Rover back for a week or so now and all looks good,my friend stripped out the injectors and he has replaced the seals on the injectors as they weren't good and he questioned whether they've been out recently as he really struggled to undo them,he couldn't see a crack anywhere on the head,he spoke to Dan about his findings and they both decided to go for new injector seals which hopefully was the cause of the previous issue,he is keeping a close eye on things and we'll see if that's cured it Thumbs Up Paul

You won't see the crack in the head, unless you're lucky.

First of all you need to remove the head, then look between the cylinders. you may just see the faint mark of where the crack is.

the cracks are rarely visible to the naked eye, our local engine shop uses dye and pressure tests them plus the usual check to make sure its true.

we have had a few repaired depending where they have cracked and not had any problems since then.

ideally a new head and a refurb on the injectors is a good long term repair but cost often prohibits this.

I had a cracked cylinder head, leaking coolant. I bought a second hand head off eBay from a guy locally who only breaks TD5's. He guaranteed it was a good head and said he would swap it if it failed pressure test. I suppose not everyone is this genuine though.

I paid £150 for head, or he wanted £500 full engine without ancillaries.
