Injector seal removal
Hi all

Removed all four injectors yesterday to get bench tested , two have failed so picked up a couple of reconditioned ones today.
I’ve purchased new copper seals and clamp bolts.

All was going well but I cannot shift the camshaft cover injector seals . Sounds daft but I’ve destroyed one in the process and was wondering if there’s a tip . Frankly they almost seem like they’re not supposed to come out. The rubber just comes off in chunks leaving the rest in place

Do I need to take the cam cover off to do it ? Looks fairly straight forward but don’t want to if not necessary!

I’m trying to get it all running sweetly before I apply my new BAS remap as it was smoking quite a bit and stunk of diesel .

Thanks in advance

Yes, they come out.
They age harden over time, which is why yours are breaking off.

You need this....

Thanks ian

Are you saying that i need to remove the cam cover then to pop them out ?

I cant really see any other way without damging the cover or getting crud on the injector seats !

Yes, I tend to take them off, it's easier in the long run,
Then at least you can give everything a good clean, and not have stray bits of hard rubber dropping where it's not welcome!

Also, if the seals have gone hard, the rocker gasket won't be too clever either,
So it's best to do it all at the same time.

just lever them out with a screw driver, they'll break up and fall to bits, just fit new ones. Be careful to lever the seal and not the rocker cover.

Thanks ZSD, I’m levering as much as i can but as you say im a bit worried about damaging the cover. I think I’ll whip off the cam cover as there’s a small amount of oil weeping around the gasket so may aswell change that as well .

Once the injectors are replaced will the fuel system need priming or can I get away with cranking it over ? Ill be swapping over the vcv on the pump aswell

if the cam cover gasket is leaking then yes it has to come off anyway. you can also flush out the crankcase vent on it with some diesel/parafin while it's off.

You should just be able to crank it over, as there will still be fuel as far as the fuel rail.

when swapping injectors and vcv i am sure you have to do a pump calibration and maybe even code the injectors... 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Yes you need to recode the injectors if you're replacing them. Actually all you're doing is telling the ECU where each injector specific is.

Thanks , got the cover off and popped out the 4 injector seals. It took all my weight leaning on a screwdriver to do it mind !

Cover is now back on with a new gasket and compound so shouldn’t be leaking for a while.

Now waiting on the new injector seals that I bought off eBay 5 days ago and still haven’t arrived, “fast and free” my a*se !

I now have the BAS2 diagnostic tool so will programme the injectors. Check all is working and then apply the remap , mildly excited about that
