2009 2.4 TDCI Defender Starting Issue (10AS? IPAC? ECU?)
Hi All! Very Happy

My Defender has developed a fault where I can turn it over, it will try to start then die. There on after, no matter how long I crank the Engine over, it will fail to start.

The weird part is, I can go back the following day and all be well, it will start and run fine. It happened just under a year ago and I though had "fixed itself" Laughing ... I was wrong. The problem has persisted and now the majority of the time will fail to start.

My Defender up until recently lead me to believe that it didn't have an immobilizer. I have started it with a blank key cut from Tipsons for 8 months. With no key fob, No CDL, nothing. By taking the dash out, I've found the greed Lucas 10AS unit and realized it does have an immobilizer.

From looking at the wiring schematic, I can see the 10AS unit, goes through the IPAC (instrument cluster) and to the ECU. By disconnecting the 10AS unit and reconnecting it, sometimes it will start but the majority of the time it won't.

I've connected a LYNX diagnostic tool to the Landy and found that the Passive Immobiliser is Active and the THEFT system is active. Trying to disable them wit the LYNX tool has been rubbish. Follow all the instructions... says it will update the settings then it doesn't.

I was wondering, If I am having a problem with my 10as unit, would the Landy continue to turn over? - or if the 10as unit does stop the engine from cranking, should I look at the IPAC? - or even the ECU Sad

Thanks for your help,

Ollie Smile

Check the IPAC electrical plug at the rear is secure which would be a good starting point, as well as all your main Earth straps.
Plus both battery post clamps.

I'll check them again tomorrow!, Looking at the connector on the back of the IPAC, all looked well. Will try checking continuity though!

Hi Steve,

From checking all the earths I could find, The IPAC plug and testing continuity between them, I can't see any problems. I'm starting to look a the 10AS module but internally it looks fine, no damp whatsoever!

Do you know if the 10as would stop the Defender from cranking or if it just sends the immobilization signal to the ECU to stop it from starting? Because if it does stop the engine from cranking, then maybe I can disregard this as part of my problem!

Thanks,
Ollie Smile

Hi,

I've just plugged it in and it says starter.mot.enab and then says OFF. Even when the engine is turning over, the LYNX Tool Still says that it is Off.

Very confused.

Does this mean that the 10as Immobiliser isn't working?

Thanks,
Ollie

Could the crank position sensor need replacing in its self.

I thought someone did have that issue on here at one time.

Also worth trying.. press unlock on the fob right before starting and see what difference there is if any.
Is the red alarm light off, and appears to be functioning as you'd expect?

It should not flash at all once unlocked and before you start. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

I don't have any Fob, nor have I ever had the immobilizer light up on my dash. Its constantly been off for the year and a half of owning the landy.

I can see the sensor changing state which makes me look away from that. but by the looks it is a cheapish part to replace

Lynx Diagnostics says the passive immobiliser is enabled.. even though I have never had a key fob
