This is not a 'high-culture' question...
I frequently see canvas-sided panel vans driving around and they all have Polish plates. 
Conversely, I don't remember ever seeing a Luton-type panel van with Polish plates.
Alaways wondered and so thought I would ask, but is this a legal requirement or a cultural preference? Just curious...  Monsieur Le Grenadier

I think its more to do with the loading and sleeping arrangements.
The top unit has a sleeper unit above the cab. The second is a standard luton type which is heavier and thirstier. All the curtains on the first one allow for easier loading of pallets and longer loads. These guys get a lot of work TO the UK but sometimes have to wait for a load back across the channel to re load back. they work bloody hard and sped a lot of time away from home. Just my two pennies worth from the industry. Shipping is my thing. If we cant shift it, to anywhere, it cant be shifted!! md.couriers@virgin.net |

What a random question...
You're quite right though. Next to our office is a Polish furniture company and most of there lorries come in as 7.5t rigid with similar size trailers, all with stitched curtain sides, rather than the either solid or standard tracked curtain sides. No idea why though?!?! The only thing I wonder is loading, the stitched sides allow storage right up to the top?? Yes much easier to load with the curtains withdrawn leaving just the frame. Especially for the very long items.
Also lighter kerb weight and therefore you can legally carry a heavier load. Shipping is my thing.

But it doesn't really answer why we don't use them more in this country? I suspect it is Health and Safety working at height regulations, dictating curtains have to be secured from the ground only. James

There is also security issue for small curtain siders.
A lot of these vans are owner drivers so parked on the road or drive overnight. One scumbag with a stanley knife and its all over. Shipping is my thing. If we cant shift it, to anywhere, it cant be shifted!! md.couriers@virgin.net |

Big Dave. I can certainly see the advantages, was wondering why all Polish vans seem to prefer this type? Hence the legal/cultural angle, as even with the benefits surely some would be solid for (as given as an example) security reasons? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I pass these guys sat in lay-bys up & down the UK, one lay-by nr Speke I pass often I have seen the same guy sat there all week! Obviously waiting for a back load,
My thoughts are they don't know what they will be collecting Or delivering next & curtainsides allow them to "get to" whatever is loaded toward the front with out having to unload when doing split loads Also it allows much longer items to be loaded through the side rather then just the width of the rear door |

We in the UK run to higher GVW/GTW than our european friends, Standard is 40t GTW as opposed to 44t GTW here in the UK That's why we need the extra axle |

These Polish couriers all seem to run with curtains sides and sleeping quarters above the cab.
I've had a quite a few of these guys collect from me and all of them have been helpful, all seem to work really long hours and seem to spend very little time at home from my conversations with them. What I do find curious is that every single one of them runs the Renault Master chassis cab, are they really cheap in Poland? 2015 Defender 90XS HT |
