Not wanting to be a spoil sport, but on the theme of cyber security, might want to keep you birth date private. Confused James

Good point , I have now changed mine to a much later random date . I am now only 30 and will stay there for the next few years and then think again Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
Seriously though that was something that I did not think of and is another area of concern along with all the others Big Cry 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

Unless your real name is Swine and you, like many of the current celebrities, are only referred to by a single name, not requiring a surname, I think you’re pretty low risk. Wink

James does raise a valid point but personally I’d be more aware of the information you have used to register with any website, including forums. During this process you are often asked for full name, email address, DOB and other information; although this info should be protected, sites are hacked all the time (Yahoo, Dropbox, etc) and all the user information is harvested. This info is then sold on the dark web and ends up in the hands of people who want to use it for nefarious means. Although ripping data from individuals happens, the reality is that these scammers are looking for bulk information and stealing entire databases is where the real risk to the individual is.

To that end, and in addition with the point raised above, I would avoid using your actual DOB on any reg form. A good practice is to choose a date you’ll recall and use that - given you will need it to prove ownership of the account should you forget the password or username, remembering the date you’ve used is essential.

Lastly, if you want to put your mind at rest, or are concerned that you info might have been compromised at some point, run your email thought this site: https://haveibeenpwned.com

It trawls through all the known databases that have been compromised and checks to see if your email address shows up. It is run by a security expert as a goodwill project and is worth bookmarking. If you find your email in there, it will tell who which stolen list it shows up on and you can act on that. Best practice is not to use one password across all your accounts because these thieves will take the stolen info, drop it into a program and try your username/email and password on all the main sites; therefore, if you log on details are the same across all your accounts, they’ve just got access to it all!

Anyway, having just come off the back of a GDPR and tech security course, you can tell it is at the forefront of my mind... needless to say, there must be more pleasant things to discuss on a Sunday Mr. Green

If I was to offer only one piece of advice to someone to be more secure, this would be it ^

Next would be to ensure you're using super strong passwords, and also to use the 2-factor authentication for any sites that have it as a feature (Amazon, PayPal, Gmail etc.). I would NEVER use an email account/service that doesn't use 2-factor authentication.

James.

You're right. They call it "jigsaw reidentification" in the trade. In theory you only need 31 pieces of aggregated information to have more than a 50% chance of identifying someone worldwide. Shocked
