With rfl on fuel i would save big time with the Jeep as it doesn't use more than about 5 or 6 hundred quid a year in diesel yet costs about the same in road tax . The Jimny on the other hand uses nominally 2000 quid a year and would be almost prohibitive to run with anything more than a couple of pence per litre increase which we all know would be nothing like the level the treasury would impose. But road tax on fuel takes no account of how clean a vehicle is or indeed its size and therefore impact on the road in terms of wear and tear needing repair. The Jimny for all the use it gets is half the weight of the cherokee, its engine is half the size, it does a minimum of ten mpg more than the cherokee and it's emissions standard is significantly better being a euro 5 petrol over a euro 4 diesel so why should it be penalised just because I use it more when it is overall less negative? The current system while complex on the face of it is actually quite well balanced and reasonably fair taking as many variables into account as possible. If we had only one identical type of car available to the entire population and the only variable was how much we used it then road tax on fuel would be equitable but we don't live in that world. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

The supposed whole point is to encourage a move to cleaner more fuel efficient means of of transport so tax by the litre is the logical step. Yes it penalise the petrol mower, hedge trimmer etc, that would be valid if we are trying to reduce dependency on fossil fuel. I would still advocate using vat though so it doesn't hurt business too much. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response
