I have Fox on mine.
I don't know if it's a forum thing where everybody has their favourite based on recommendations from other forum users but they seem under represented considering they have a huge presence in competitive applications! Build quality is brilliant, ride quality very good... Longevity I don't know as I've only had them about 9 months but seem ok so far. They are available in +2" (+1.5" to +3.5" flavour) and are (almost) within your budget! I am no expert here, having LOWERED the rear of my Defender by 50mm... I also installed KONI HEAVY TRAK shocks which improved ride a lot...

I would give Gwyn Lewis a ring and ask what they'd recommend, they're so customer service orientated it's amazing.
They've stopped me wasting hundreds of £ which might have gone there way and all i've brought from them is a full set of their mud guards for a 90! However when I do my suspension, i'll buy everything but the springs from them  1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

The Fox shocks are looking more appealing, considering splashing the cash and then not worrying about it for years to come.
How do they hold up to body roll? I did look at the Konis but they all seem to be for lowered Defenders which im not interested in. I will have a chat with them, the rest of my set up bar springs is GL! |

give Gwyn or Devon 4x4 a shout.
d44 used to do there own springs as a cheaper alternative to ome which are very very good. I'm running 3yr old big bore tf shocks and they are lasting well , bar the crap paint and bushes having worn out very quickly. as an alternative to the big cheap brands try Paul at West coast he doesn't advertise much lr stuff but does stock the Ironman range which i have on another truck and they are very good and fairly priced alternative. they seem to last a long time on Toyota and they can be heavy old rigs. |

Was jusst going to post a Damper query when I found this thread. Back ion the day ( long time ago) I fitted Koni Shocks to my Fiat 124 and they really were the dogs b******s!.
Don't seem to see many people recommending Konis these days and I wondered why (other than the price) . When we head to france for the family holiday every year, Gertie our 110 has 5 bikes, a tandem,roofbox camping kit and family squeezed into her. and could really do with tightening up the suspension, will probablyalso fit anti-roll bars. Not really interested in raising or lowering suspension for looks, just want something that copes with wide range of load situations. Was chatting to an italian guy in our normal campsite that had the big bore Konis fitted and he certainly swore by them. Noticed 1 or two people menton they had Konis. Been reading the TF catalogue and did wonder about them. They are quite expensive but I'd have Koni's again. I've had them fitted to two previous Land Rovers (a Discovery 1 that was kitted out for overland travel and a 110 station wagon) and think they're superb. I've only not fitted them to my current 90 as the use really doesn't justify them. Darren

Think people are getting a little confused about what a 'shock absorber' actually does. Although a stiffer 'sport' shock will firm up the ride during sudden jolts they will not reduce body roll. All they really do is slow the movement of the suspension and kill and bouncing. I have previously heard people who think that fitting different shocks will lower or raise the ride height on their own.
A gas charged shock will marginally increase the spring rate but not by any substantial amount.
