Group Buy:SP4x4 Series style conversion doors for a Defender
Hi all,

Following this thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic57684.html

It appears as if there is a solution to part of the issues we get with our later doors: https://www.sp-4x4.com/DEFENDER_SERIES_DOO...fconv1.htm

The parts in this kit are:

Pair Of SP4x4 Bespoke Made Door Bottoms
Pair Of Fully Glazed Series 3 Door Tops
RH & LH Anti Burst Handles
RH & LH Strikers For Handles
 2x Door Top Latches
2x Door Top To Bottom Seals
2x Door Top To Bottom Seals
3 Barrel Lock & Key Set

£290 + VAT - £348 inc VAT

Benefits of converting to 2 part doors:

1. Much cheaper than new Defender push button doors
2. Much simpler and less to go wrong as there is no winding window mechanism to go wrong!
3. Much less rot prone
4. Lift up handles are much stronger against theft prevention as the lock design is stronger
5. Lift up handles are off-road safe as they do not protrude out of the door like the plastic push button handles do.
6. Much more elbow room inside the cabin
7. Removable door tops if you have a soft top or just wish to let more air in!

In this kit, these are the only Series style defender door bottoms you will find in the world that are made specifically to convert all Defenders to the simpler and more robust Series split doors.

These doors and tops are steel framed with aluminium skins as per factory spec

Before today the only option to do this yourself is to buy standard series 3 or series 2 door bottoms and tops and modify and add various brackets to make them fit Defenders. The main problem was that the check strap bracket is completely different and in the wrong place on standard series doors.

Also normal series doors lack the lever thats pushes the interior light switch on and off which also acts as part of the intruder alarm system from mid-1990 models onwards. These are made by the same company that makes Defender push button doors so the same jig and bracket has been used on these doors so it is in exactly the right place. Our bespoke doors bolt straight onto any Defender 90/ 110/ 130 1983- present and replicate all of the original functions your vehicle needs. No extra modification or welding is needed; these simply bolt onto you existing hinges!

For those with 110s, there is also a second row kit as well: http://www.sp-4x4.com/DEFENDER_SERIES_DOOR...fconv2.htm

350 + VAT or 420 inc VAT

I'll let this run for 30 days to check interest as I can appreciate at this time of year money is generally being spent on kids for those with families.

With a view to run the actual group buy in early 2018.

I know that the whole Coatseyy Evil or Very Mad situation has soured this kind of thing (at the moment) but for me this (group buys/discounts/doing things that benefit each other) is part of what being a club is all about, I want to assure everyone I will be standing a LONG way away from any money (other than to pay for my own doors!) 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

This is just what I've been thinking off
I'm in the process of repainting my defender at the minute and knew that the doors were scabby
I had reskined two damaged doors 17 years ago and they have done well, they still look great but that rust has eaten the bottom away
and with all the other runners etc needing workI needed this conversion is ideal so I will happily paint what I have and hope something can be sorted early next year Billy

Kit, thought I recognized the green n/s/d and the tools on the wall. I also bought the galv. strips that fit between the upper and lower door parts. Also you will need to source the striker shims to locate the locks correctly. I got those from Richards (very cheap).
Cheers, Simon

Best of luck with this project. Thumbs Up

It is quite ironic for me, that people are now thinking of going back to slidey windows! Laughing

Here's a picture of the bits I used to fit the front doors. The kit from SP was comprehensive but I still managed to buy other bits that were needed. For example:-
1. The kit came with the door strikers but without the spacers (shims). I got these from John Richards. Whilst on the phone to them I also bought the nut plates for securing the strikers to the Rover. I also purchased the bolts for securing the strikers.
2. In addition to the kit I also purchased from SP the following items to finish the job:-
Lock gaskets, to butt between the lock and the bare door. Ended up not fitting these and they haven't leaked so far!.
Plastic surrounds for the outside of the door locks.
Galvanised internal door handles.
New zinc plated hinges.
3. Belt and braces I bought s/s nut retainer plates and s/s nut stud plates from YRM metal solutions. These little chaps bolt the locks to the doors and sit on the o/s of the doors in the lock recesses. Open to the element, I thought stainless was the way to go for longevity. YRM also had s/s fitting (bolt kits) for the front door hinges so I had some of these too.

Nice tips, have you got the part number for the s/s nut retainer plates and s/s nut stud plates from YRM as I can't really visualize what they are? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Just had a look on the YRM web site and they are product numbers 170 and 171, the s/s door bolt kit was product 1004.
You will need 2 of each of the nut retainer plates. There are two of these on each door (top and bottom).
These retainer plates were in the SP kit but only made of steel and thought they would rust out, being exposed to the elements. The YRM ones come with s/s nuts too!. Also purchased product 1013 for the front door hinge fitment.
Cheers Simon Thumbs Up
