Fitting Sliders - Do spats need trimming?
I have some First Four tree sliders to fit to my DCPU.

Having offered them up to the sill it looks like the spats may need trimming in order to fit. Does anybody have any experience of this? Particularly with the First Four ones? There is no mention of spat cutting in the First Four fitting guide.

Cheers

When I fitted mine (a different make) the spats needed minor trimming. The edge that fits to the front (at the front of the vehicle) and the rear (at rear) of the original sill panel need removing. It's an easy job with a Stanley knife.

Is it these ones? Doesn't look like you should need to trim the arches.

Not sure why those from First four are so expensive. These are £140 in vat delivered. I've had them fitted for over 3 years and they're great

My front arch eyebrows needed trimming slightly to fit the sliders I bought from Dixons (rock-sliders.co.uk). The Safari Equip ones that replaced them didn't need the eyebrows trimming (from memory), although they were already trimmed from previous installation.

As an element of balance to epictrail's post above, I originally had Dixons rocksliders fitted to my 90. They were very well fabricated, but the powder coating was rubbish. They started to rust within a few months and were in a pretty bad state after a couple of years. Obviously I could have done something about this as soon as I noticed it, but it was too much of a pain to remove them, clean them up and re-paint them, so I just left them. Eventually I replaced them with a galvanised and powder coated set from Safari Equip, which after 2 years of winter road salt still look exactly the same as the day they were fitted. I know there are people who have had no issues with the Dixons product, but this was my personal experience. They may well have improved their powder coating process since I bought mine, or maybe mine were just a bad example. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Defenders are hand built and it is difficult to find two Defenders exactly the same. Then there are tolerances in manufacturing the R & T sliders.

The Safari Equip R & T sliders have threaded holes in the end. Take out a couple of wheel arch flare fittings and realigning the wheel flare is sometimes possible without trimming it.

Thanks for the responses so far. The photos on the FirstFour site show the sliders fitting 'in between' the spats so not requiring trimming.

Below are some photos that show the issue against my 110 DCPU. You can see that lining the slider up with the spat at one end means the slider fouls the spat at the opposite end. The spat is removed in the nearside front photo to highlight the issue.

If the sliders fitted flush with the doors this wouldn't be an issue as the sliders could slip behind the spats as the original sills do but as the sliders protrude then the spats are going to need trimming which I am not keen to do
