Managed 32.4 mpg when I mistakenly put shell v power in at 1.32 a litre, the TD5 loved it, really quick and revy, back to normal shell, noticed the grunt was less. Razz

2003 Defender 90 2.5 TD XS CSW Bonatti Grey
Filled up with Shell V Power stuff (TD5) and can certainly notice a difference in grunt...whether worth the extra dosh is another question. Would be interested whether would be beneficial for the engine , now 110k miles, if used the good stuff consistently.

Mine sounds better and I get around 10% more miles per tank.
I use the expensive stuff if it's less than 10% more!

I have heard that diesel additives have a detrimental effect on the DPF, whereas premium diesel is fine.

Hard pressed to find any premium stuff around here, all supermarkets. There is a Total in the Chamonix Valley, but they add a number of taxes onto their prices:

1. More expensive than supermarkets, because we're not a supermarket, tax
2. We're the first petrol station after the Mont Blanc Tunnel Tax
3. We're at altitude Tax
4. We occasionally have a snow-covered forecourt Tax
5. Our cafe has views of Mont Blanc Tax
6. Some Tax, just because we can
7. Some tax because we can include the Chamonix postcode in our address
8. Some tax because we can add Mont Blanc in our name
9. Some tax, because we have French employment laws to deal with
10. Some tax because we sell premium diesel and nobody else does

So expensive it's not included on ANY of the generic local-petrol-prices comparison websites. Unless they do one for Superyachts and F1 cars...

Mr. Le Grenadier, all those french taxes added up still make it a bargain compared with our regular Swiss diesel prices, let alone the price I pay for my BP Ultimate diesel here. Shocked
The only thing which eases Swiss fuel price pain a bit is the fact that we have B0 diesel, i.e. 100% mineral oil without the addition of 5 to 10% biodiesel like the rest of Europe. Switzerland never approved biodiesel for cars which is a good thing for our motors.
I outright hate french supermarket fuels, I know from experience the difference in engine clatter between what I was having in the early years from SuperU diesel and later from our branded Swiss diesels, so I happily stick to Swiss BP Ultimate for about 8 years already.
Now, with the frequency I fill up my truck, once every 2 to 3 months or so, the price does not matter that much. Laughing
Fuel price really is meaningless if I compare it with what I paid to dealer for installing a new clutch a few weeks ago, or for the new sump and dipstick a few weeks before that when the dipstick point had broken off and fell in the old sump. Painfull. Rolling Eyes

I used to have theory that it was more important to use a busy station on the basis that the fuel was fresher. Didnt want the stale fuel, water and muck from the bottom of a little used storeage tank. Thinking about it now, that seems like nonsense ! Laughing Laughing Laughing 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
