Scammell
I have spent a while on YouTube tonight watching these:

My Grandad used to be in the Royal Engineers in war days as a driver for Officers in WW2.
He used to drive these and the early Jeeps, and other vehicles of course.

I'm sure some of the rest of you have plenty of stories too!

What wonderful projects to have if anyone had the space, the licensing and most importantly lots of funds. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Absolutely amazing truck. The engine sounds great. Thanks for posting.

Looks like the steering lock is similar to a Defender Very Happy

Scammell. Another great name swallowed up and spat out by British Leyland.

I seem to recall that Rolls Royce engines were not uncommon in Scammell and Leyland trucks right up to the seventies?

Many years ago, I saw one of these in action at an All Wheel Drive Club day at Borden and it really was awesome. The walking beam rear axle makes it damn near impossible to lift a wheel and they'll go places that would swallow Land Rovers whole.

Slightly overkill for what looked like a bit of light green laning though Laughing Darren

Not sure what axle ground clearance there is but I'd say triple the Defender.

Equally the Defender is much much lighter and can get places one wouldn't. Laughing Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

IIRC Scammell was eventually bought by Unipower, I heard a story that there was a gentlemens' agreement that Carmichael wouldn't try to outbid Unipower for the company, a bit before my time though.

You may well be correct about Unipower.

Leyland and Scammell were one of the same thing in the early eighties. The four axle quarry tippers (the forerunner of the DAF CF) either had Scammell or Leyland in big letters above the grille. Same truck, different name.

We're Unipower and Alvis tied up?

Scammell were one of the go to tank hauliers. Crane Fruehauf in East Dereham up the road from me built the tank transporter trailers which something like the Scammell would pull. A right P.I.T.A on the A11 on a Saturday morning before the road got dualed (mind that was only a couple of years ago Whistle ) Top speed was around 35mph If I recall correctly.

After the Government torpedoed Unipower by awarding the HET contract to Oshkosh, despite the evident superiority of the Watford product, Unipower was doomed. Alvis bought the remnants, but it was effectively all over.

The sole example of the Unipower MH-8875, the tractor for the HET prototype, went into heavy haulage with GEC Alsthom and then to ALE, where it became a favourite of crews and enthusiasts alike. It was extensively rebuilt by ALE, mainly to engineer-out the unique transmission with which it was built. It was, and remains, I believe, the most powerful vehicle ever to operate on the UK's roads.

The Unipower legend didn't die with the closure of the Watford factory, however. In 2012 ALE realised that new, more modern, and cleaner heavy haulage tractors were needed, and built six Trojan MH-8870 tractors to their own design, based on the lesskns learned from the 8875, at their HQ in Hixon. The base platforms for these were six Unipower M-series 8x8 prime movers cast by the French army. These have a close likeness to the 8875 but incorporate many new features, such as the ability to be controlled in multiple by thd lead driver via CANbus.

Unipower 8x8 vehicles are still in service with the British army as part of the BR90 bridging system in two variants, the ABLE (Automotive Bridge Laying Equipment) and TBT (Tactical Bridge Transporter). As far as I know there are no plans to cast these yet, there being no suitable replacement, but the bad news for MV enthuiasts is that they are far too wide to operate on the UK's roads except under special types regs, so private ownership is very unlikely to be practical.

I had the good fortune to go on a factory tour of the Unipower plant a little while before it closed, it was very interesting. What a waste!

Cheers, Blackwolf. Good post Thumbs Up

In aggrement with your sentiments, what a waste

I mentioned the trailer manufacturer, Crane Fruehauf in my previous post. They too are now long gone from Dereham and North Walsham in Norfolk.

Many years ago there was a Land Rover event at Top Farm in Yorkshire also attended by some heavy military kit including Scammell and Leyland Martian. Alan Rogerson used to organise it and was big into Series Ones at the time but eventually got into Scammells IIRC . Some of you older Yorkshire lads may remember this event.
There was a "Mud Hole" which various vehicles used to attempt to get through. And somewhere I have a picture of a Leyland Martion stuck in the mud hole, I think it was driven by Brian Hartley, again IIRC.
The Scammell's and the Martian were great to watch and always wished I had the room to store one.
