Caranex experiences
Just wondering if anyone has tried the Caranex (H4TL model) with a Defender, and what its pros and cons are.

I suspect the cons are:-

No mesh on door
Maybe not strong, especially when pitched without a supporting vehicle
Difficult to reverse a vehicle back up to it

How do you attach it to a 90? Does it need rubber suckers on the side of the van?
Is it draught-free, and does the skirt at the rear cross member let anything in, and does it get dirty?

I quite like the prospect of a covered entrance to the rear Land Rover door, and its standing height headroom.

Perhaps it's not a tent for all occasions, but is it handy for some?

Used my caranex with my last discovery. Not sure what model I have, but obviously fits a discovery. It worked well for me, but I didn't do the drive away thing with it. When I was taking it down I drove the motor forward and the caranex stayed up, I think there is an extra pole or guys you can put in to hold it firm. There is also another panel to fit in and cover up the open area where the motor had been. Didn't have a roof rack before so it was fine, but not great now with the rack and ladder on the rear of the 90.
The skirt etc did a good job of keeping out what the Western Isles was throwing at me - nice piece of kit.

I'm still trying to weigh up the different camping options.

On Friday night I amazingly met a lady who'd won a competition to borrow a Mini with a Maggiolina hard top roof tent for the weekend. It looked really nice, and we had a go at setting it up and taking it down, but I didn't like to ask if I could climb up into it and try it for size. No doubt there would also be compromises with a roof top tent, and the Caranex has the advantage of standing height headroom.

I came across another Caranex review where the owner said that, in prolonged heavy rain, water pools on the flat section of roof, and the weight of the water causes the roof to sag, eventually pulling up the tent pegs! That might be down to the way they're pitching it, but I think it was on a Land Rover.
