Securing spare wheel under a Ford Galaxy
So I have a 1998 Mk1 Ford Galaxy (seemed like a good idea at the time)

A few years ago, had to have the spare tyre replaced. Garage used an impact gun on the winch which secures the wheel under the car and trashed the mechanism. Then claimed he never used the gun and it was already broken.

Anyway, I then replaced with a Disco 3 spare wheel winch as i got that for £50 rather than the circa £200 that Ford wanted for a genuine Ford one.

Long story short this has also broken as what i didn't know is that you cannot wind ( or unwind) with no load on the winch as this trashes the winch.

So anyone has any ideas how to secure a spare wheel under a car without using one of those winch things as most seem to be made of cheese,

an idea for you, can you not retro fit a Peugeot spare wheel cage plus system? a bit of custom diy would be on order, but might be worth looking at. Peugeot/ citroen systems do have a problem of seizing due to the salt etc. I replaced mine last year and we well greeced it up! Also my 306 has a fifth alloy so i have the wheel in a wheel bag too!
Or if possible even find a good second had unit? might be a little tricky to find now, due to the age of the car etc. but worth a look at. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I had this problem when I bought a 54-plate Galaxy last year.

Got second-hand one of ebay for £55, and just found this one with a simple search.

Clearly, I cannot vouch for it....................

Maybe a pen and paper time and draw up something of your own design and then off to a metal fab place to make it for you ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Mr Dorset Smith - please tell more about the Transit Wheel Carrier?

Which one did you go for and was it easy to fit?

Not possible with a Ford Galaxy - have you seed the bonnet?

Re swing away - I really want to store the wheel under the car - just need a convenient way to secure it there - its an old steel wheel so no one would want to nick it
