Blackwolf's assumption regarding lack of transfer case and diff info is correct - indeed he's almost word perfect!
I also concur with the comments regarding poor quality of the item. I've bought many Haynes manuals in the past for cars and motorcycles and have always considered Haynes as a necessary evil. The puma manual though is the worst by far of any I've owned. First, it's the only paperback version I've come across and the paper used for the content is abysmal. It's like blotting paper - only thinner! Photographs are too low resolution and lacking in contrast resulting in a dull grainy images. I'm a bit OCD with my Defender and I can't help feeling a bit ripped off by Haynes. I'll have to see if they redeem themselves when I come to need the manual. |

I came across one of the first Haynes manuals I bought the other day, covering the old Austin 1300GT from the 70s, and yes, if you needed to replace the 3rd/4th gear synchro baulk rings in the gearbox it tells you how. it is printed on paper that looks like paper, hardbound, and the binding is decent too.
Now Haynes manuals seems to be aimed at the folk who have trouble locating the screenwasher reservoir filler, dipstick, or changing a fuse, rather than (as the covers used to say) "picking up a spanner and dismantling it". I always wondered how you would dismantle a spanner! A sign of the times, I suppose. like the "ICON" book with its apalling grammar and many errors, or the Ben Fogle book with, well, words rather fail me on that one. 
Or cars designed for people too stupid to be able to turn the headights on when it gets dark. |

Am I the first to spot an potentially damaging error in the Haynes manual?
In the Routine Maintenance Section (item 13) talks about the Transmission (Main Gearbox) oil level check... guess what? It says the filler plug is a level plug. It says the "level should be up to the lower edge of the filler/level plug hole" ... OOps Spotted a couple of other errors too...  Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Well done MartinK Good Spot...you are absolutely right...
Whilst they do say at the beginning of the that section (Routine maintenance and servicing) 1.2 Capacities Main Gearbox: MT82-6-speed ............... 2.20 litres To advise that you 'Refill to the lower edge of the hole'... is a poor mistake, and potentially damaging as you say. Whilst the MT82 Gearbox should have been designed to 'fill to the filler hole'...it wasn't. Haynes should know that the Defender comes with a 'following' that is probably more mechanically knowledgeable and willing to get involved in DIY maintenance than most Vehicle Types. Are we going to 'proof read' this manual for Haynes... 
I also think that they should have described the Oil Capacities more fully...

Got mine yesterday, disappointed isn't strong enough word.
Picture quality Very poor in some the detail is missing. Tyre pressure , I wonder how they got those figures they obviously didn't read an owner manual. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Yep, just got mine today and I was just about to post the same warning. But it does say that the capacity is 2.2 litres.It also specifies GL5 for the main gearbox. This is detrimental to some of the innards so it should be GL4. Received mine today. I am also very disappointed that it is paperback and the paper used is so poor.
I have all the old Haynes manuals I have ever bought (I know, sad isn't it?) and they are all so much better quality than this one. |

I got one for my birthday and spotted a mistake immediately. It says to fill gearbox oil to the plug level
 it feels like they used TD5 manual as the basis and just edited what they though was different, but not very thoroughly. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Now if Land Rover gave us a handbook similar to the 200 tdi or even the series 111.... Short of stripping the engine or gearbox they contained all you needed to know for the maintenance of your vehicle. Couple that to a Land Rover workshop manual and you were flying. The current hand book doesn't even tell you how to replace a fuel filter. Wonder why.
