That Airfield has a very interesting website with some interesting WW11 info on it relative to the airfield. Checked it out as I'm interested in that stuff.

There was a german bomber pilot who visited the airfield after the war as he flew 4 missions to bomb it and they couldn’t find it each time as they painted the runway to match the moorland ...

Also when they first opened the museum they did an airfield tour on a milk float (long story ...but ...) we were sitting lon the float gong round the sites listening to the people chatting about the aircraft that were left there after the war and what happened to them, how they would like to know if there was any hidden treasure ... one of the older gents said that there were about 10 aircraft buried in the woods at the end of the runway ... as he was paid to bury them with his digger !!

so lots of history there and lots to see if you take the time to look around .. star trail photos, murmurations from the evening starlings coming in to roost, all the airfield is open to list and wander all over - so worth a list when you come over next pickles!! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper - soon to be a work in process

Thanks for that Wyvern. Re the buried aircraft,.....looks like someone had better get out their metal detector!
We have nowhere near the amount of WW11 relics that you guys have, but there was a lot of fighting in the Pacific area, so after the war there was a lot of "surplus". Consequently there are several rumors of new aircraft in crates buried at various sites etc,...but none have ever been found. The latest rumor I heard was of 10 new spitfires "discovered" in moisture proof packaging in Pakistan?...Don't think anyone's seen one yet though.
When last in the U.K. we went to Duxford. Wow,....some awesome stuff there!!
We also went to an airshow at Biggin Hill on the occasion that a Bell AeroCobra crashed (about 400M from us), totally destroying the plane & killing the pilot.
Regards, Pickles.'

This is fellow member Peter Td4, with whom we had the honour and luck to spend some good times, doing the Defender thing on the F910 heading east from Askja:

this is him just a bit earlier:

Here's our Antares, if I'm not mistaken on the F26 / Sprengisandurleid on our way to Nyidalur.

It looks very nice and calm, but we had been driving through a fierce wind. I had to open the door using both hands.

From Nyidalur, we spent 10 hours driving the 120 km of the northern part of the F910 to Askja. This is about two hours from Askja:
